The strength in depth of junior boxing around the country was underlined when honours were shared around at the weekend’s England Boxing National Junior Championships 2022 (26th and 27th March), held at the Guildford Spectrum.

All 11 regions enjoyed at least one title victory and boxers from 44 different clubs won the 51 titles on offer.

The highly-competitive nature of the Championships was further reinforced by the fact that only seven clubs – Seacroft, Powerday Hooks, West Ham, Sharpstyle, Pinewood, Repton and Camberley – won more than one title, and none won more than two.

Regionally, London, with 10, topped the charts for the most wins, followed by Tyne, Tees and Wear (eight), Yorkshire and Home Counties (both six), Midlands, North West and Southern Counties (all four), Western Counties and Eastern Counties (both three), East Midands (two) and Merseyside and Cheshire (one).

“It was fantastic to see so many people have a great time at the Juniors over the weekend, and we at England Boxing appreciate all the hard work that has gone in from so many people to make it happen,” said England Boxing’s Interim Chief Executive Officer, Charlie Ford.

“The fact that no one club or region dominated shows that there are so many clubs producing quality boxers, some of which will now go on to compete at the Junior Europeans in September.

“Our congratulations go to not only the winners, but all those boxers who have made it this far, as that is quite an achievement in itself given the level of competition.”

Open Class champions were rewarded with a championship belt, while Cadet boxers won a gold medal.

Finalists in all classes picked up silver medals and losing semi-finalists bronze medals, while all boxers received certificates in recognition of their efforts.
The event was open to spectators and was also streamed live on YouTube.

Female boxers of the tournament, as selected by the team of watching England Talent coaches, were Faye Marshall (Cadet, Walsall Wood, Under 60kg) and Alice Pumphrey (Open Class, Purge, Under 52kg).

Male boxers of the tournament were Leo Myers (Cadet, Phil Thomas School of Boxing, Under 46kg) and Leighton Birchall (Open Class, Sharpstyle, Under 50kg).

The female bouts of the tournament were Grace Shire (Arena) v Faye Marshall (Walsall Wood) at Under 60kg in the Cadet category and Nancy Shepherd (Kent Gloves) v Monae Smith (Sharpstyle) at Under 57kg in the Open Class.

Pride of the north at England Boxing National Youth Championships 2021

The northern powerhouses of Tyne, Tees and Wear and Yorkshire enjoyed an England Boxing National Youth Championships 2021 to remember in Banbury at the weekend, as boxers from those regions claimed a string of titles.

No less than eight boxers from the North-East prevailed in Sunday’s finals, with wins for Shaun Huddart (Birtley) and Lee Rogers (both Birtley), Alex Hubery (Shildon), Zoe MacDonald (Houghton), Jude Percival (Wearmouth), Harley Carberry (Billingham), Sophie Ray (Kenton) and Reece Readshaw (Phil Thomas) in their respective categories.

The White Rose county were not far behind at the Spiceball Leisure Centre thanks to successes for Sabba Hussain (Sharkey’s), Jack Lambert (Laisterdyke), Teagn Stott (Sheffield Boxing Centre), Codie Smith (Hull Boxing Centre), Florence Mangeni (Gladiators), Maddie Gittens (St Paul’s) and Darren Littlewood (Parson Cross).

Together with three more titles for the NorthWest region, it meant the three most northerly England Boxing regions accounted for 18 of the 41 titles on offer.

That said, there was a wide spread of wins covering the length and breadth of the nation, with every one of the 11 regions providing at least one champion.

As ever, there was a strong showing for London, who had seven victories, while the Midlands also did well, with five boxers coming out on top.

In all, 38 clubs could boast a national title by the end of the weekend, and only three of them (West Ham, Priory Park and Birtley) had more than one victor.

“Across the female and male categories, we saw some very accomplished performances from young boxers who have clearly been working hard during the break enforced by Covid-19,” said England Development Coach, Amanda Coulson.

“While there was no Championships for lots of the age groups last year, the Youths did manage to get theirs in before the first lockdown, but, even so, there were still lots of boxers at the weekend who really came to our attention for the first time, as well as others who we already know about.

“Although there is no talent pathway this year, it is expected to be back up and running next year, and we are inviting those who won Open class titles to attend a Youth Champions Day with the England Talent coaches on Sunday 12th December (at West Ham Boxing Club).

“Those who have performed well here, and, age-wise, are still eligible, have also put themselves in a strong position for the England Boxing National Youth Championships 2022, which are coming up in February.”

Open Class champions were rewarded with a championship belt, while Cadets and Development boxers won a gold medal.

Finalists in all classes picked up silver medals and losing semi-finalists bronze medals, while all boxers from the quarter-finals stages onwards received an England Boxing certificate in recognition of their efforts.

Female boxers of the tournament, as selected by the team of watching England Talent coaches, were Florence Mangeni (Development, Gladiators, Under 54kg), Alex Bryant (Cadet, Trowbridge, Under 55kg) and Sacha Hickey (Open Class, Peacock, Under 64kg).

Male boxers of the tournament were Louie Ward (Development, Rainham, Under 60kg), Tom Welland (Cadet, West Ham, Under 56kg) and Codie Smith (Open Class, Hull Boxing Centre, Under 60kg).

The female bout of tournament was Alex Bryant (Trowbridge) v Acacia Barron (Titleshot) in the Cadet category, while the male bout of the tournament was Lee Rogers (Birtley) v Lewis Noakes (Hall Green) in the Open Class.

England Boxing’s first national championships since the onset of the Coronavirus Pandemic proved to be a huge hit – and brought a visit from AIBA President Umar Kremlev.

The eagerly-anticipated England Boxing National Schools Championships 2021 semi-final and Finals Day took place over the weekend (Saturday 25th September and Sunday 26th September) at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle.

It attracted more than 200 of the country’s best girl and boy boxers in the Schools division – for those born in 2007 (Class B), 2008 (Class A) and 2009 (Cadet) – who were all eager to earn the right to call themselves a national champion.

The event was the first such occasion since the England Boxing National Youth Championships 2020 in February and March of last year because of Covid-19-related government lockdowns.

Titles were shared around across the weight divisions, with 65 clubs able to boast a national champion.

The most successful clubs were London duo Repton and Rainham, the latter newly-formed during lockdown, who each won five each, with Camberley’s Sporting Ring claiming three.

But there were successes for clubs across the country, including those from host region Tyne Tees and Wear such as Phil Thomas, Middlesbrough, Olympian, North Star, District Youth, Houghton, Bishop Auckland, Sunderland, Redcar and Birtley (see below for full list of winners).

“It was fantastic to see boxer’s back in action at a national event after such a long time out of the ring because of lockdown, and what better to way to start off than off with the stars of the future?” said England Boxing’s Development Coach Amanda Coulson.

“There are definitely a number of talented boxers to keep an eye on in the future – girls and boys – and there were some great contests in among the bouts, along with plenty of effort from all those who took part.

“Considering the lockdown and the part that has played in stopping boxing for a while, the determination and resilience shown by these boxers to come back as they have is second to none.

“We look forward to seeing what these boxers are going to go on and achieve in the future.”

Mr Kremlev became AIBA President in November of last year and came to see the Schools boxers in action as part of a trip to England.

He also met England Boxing staff and officials and handed out certificates to some of the finalists after their bouts.

Class B and Class A champions were rewarded with a pair of golden gloves, while Cadets won a gold medal.

Finalists in all classes picked up silver medals and losing semi-finalists bronze medals, while all boxers received an England Boxing certificate in recognition of their efforts.

Those who won titles in Class A and Class B are now being invited to train with the England Talent coaches at a Schools Champions Day on 23rd, 24th and 25th October.

Female boxers of the tournament, as selected by the team of watching England Talent coaches, were Ruby White (Sturminster Newton), Talia Rumbol (Newham) and Lexi Walker (Great Wyrley), while their male equivalents were Archie Coates (Rainham), Bailey Wilding (Mikey’s) and Mohammad Safari (The Ring).

The bout of the tournament was adjudged to have been the Male Under 52kg Class B bout between Chadwell St Mary’s Tony Saunders and Rainham’s William Howard, which the latter won on a split after a close and highly-entertaining contest.

Surbiton’s men’s team came from 3-0 down against Wimbledon, scoring three times in eight incredible minutes before winning 3-2 in a shoot-out. The victory broke Wimbledon’s two-year winning streak and the match was a fantastic advert for the men’s domestic game.

Surbiton’s women then secured a fourth straight Investec Women’s League Championship, being pushed hard by a very resilient Holcombe side before coming away with a 3-1 victory.

Earlier in the day, Canterbury’s men’s team retained their Men’s Hockey League status with a big win over already-promoted Sevenoaks. In the Investec Women’s Hockey League play-offs, Buckingham were promoted to the top flight after a thrilling 4-3 win over Wimbledon in a winner-takes-all encounter.

The next major event at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre is England women’s one-off international against Holland on 11 June, closely followed by England’s men in the Hockey World League Semi Final from 15 to 25 June.

It was the fifth successive year the three-day, 14-sport competition had been staged at the Sports Training Village, with students and organisers once again impressed by the facilities.
The students taking part were aged 16 to 19 and each had qualified to take part in the event through regional tournaments that took place in the autumn term.

As well as representing their region, the competitors were also treated to inspirational talks from former Team Bath Netball captain Pamela Cookey and Olympic and World skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold, who trains with British Skeleton at the University of Bath.

Sports hosted at the university included basketball, beach volleyball, cross country,

football, hockey, netball, rugby, table tennis, tennis, trampolining and volleyball.

The Wilkinson Sword trophy for the region with most points went to the South West.

University of Bath Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, took in some of the competition on Sunday and was impressed with the very high standard on show.

She said: “We have a proud tradition of sporting excellence here at the University and were delighted to host the national championships. It was great to see so many young athletes from across the UK enjoying
our world-leading facilities here at Bath.”
