England women v New Zealand women – ICC Women’s World T20 Warm-Up, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai

England women won the toss and elected to bat

England women – 126 (Leah Kasperek 4-12, Felicity Leydon-Davis 3-19, Tammy Beaumont 56)

19.2 overs

New Zealand women – 106 (Jenny Gunn 4-12, Heather Knight 3-13, Danielle Hazell 2-16, Sophie Devine 31)

19.1 overs

England women won by 20 runs

Tammy Beaumont’s half-century laid the platform for England women to complete a warm-up double over New Zealand with a 20-run victory ahead of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20.

Having won a last-ball thriller by four wickets when the two sides met yesterday, England found the going tougher in this Chennai rematch as off-spinner Leigh Kasperek took 4-12 and Felicity Leydon-Davis grabbed 3-19 with her medium pace.

But despite being bowled out for 126 with four balls unused, Mark Robinson’s side had enough runs on the board as Jenny Gunn claimed 4-12 to help bowl out the White Ferns for 106.

With Sarah Taylor rested for the second of England’s three warm-up games, the onus was on the rest of the order to step up and Beaumont did just that with 56 from 52 balls at the top of the order.

However, she received little support as no other England player passed 12.

Amy Jones fell early after mistiming a pull, Heather Knight and Natalie Sciver departed cheaply and Georgia Elwiss skewed Leydon-Davis to point having just hit a six over midwicket.

Beaumont was run out attempting a quick single, and another mix-up accounted for Lydia Greenway, before Kasperek and Leydon-Davis made light work of the tail.

New Zealand made a positive start but Rachel Priest was bowled by Anya Shrubsole and Suzie Bates was caught by Katherine Brunt at cover attempting a third straight boundary off Gunn.

Amy Satterthwaite chopped a wide Danielle Hazell delivery to point, and although Sophie Devine and Sara McGlashan offered some resistance with a stand of 43, when they fell to Hazell and Knight respectively Gunn swiftly mopped up the lower-order.

The win was wrapped up in style, as Knight held a stunning catch at long-off to remove Morna Nielsen and maintain England’s momentum going into their final warm-up against South Africa.

England women v New Zealand women – ICC Women’s World T20 Warm-Up, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai

England women won the toss and elected to bowl

New Zealand women – 130-6 (Katherine Brunt 2-15, Sophie Devine 40, Suzie Bates 38)

20 overs

England women – 131-6 (Lea Tahuhu 2-10, Sarah Taylor 51)

20 overs

England women won by 4 wickets

Sarah Taylor struck her fourth consecutive sprint-format half-century before Natalie Sciver hit the winning run from the final ball of the match to help England record a dramatic four-wicket ICC Women’s World Twenty20 warm-up victory over New Zealand in Chennai.

Taylor, who cracked scores of 74, 66 and 60 during the recent 2-1 series win over South Africa, continued her fine form with 51 from 52 deliveries.

The 26-year-old set up the chase of 131 with a 75-run alliance alongside Charlotte Edwards before the experienced pair both departed during a mini collapse that left 30 runs required from 23 balls.

Lydia Greenway contributed an unbeaten 23 and Danni Wyatt hit 12 until she was dismissed from the penultimate ball with one run still needed, leaving Sciver to club the final delivery over extra cover and secure the win.

Edwards’ side, having stepped in to play today due to Pakistan’s delayed arrival, take on New Zealand again tomorrow.

England, led by fit-again Katherine Brunt, restricted New Zealand to 130 for six after they were asked to make first use.

Brunt, recently hampered by a back problem, returned impressive figures of 2-15 from four overs while Anya Shrubsole and Rebecca Grundy took 1-17 and 1-24 respectively.

Brunt struck in the third over, having Rachel Priest caught behind, before the White Ferns regrouped courtesy of a 65-run stand between Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine.

Devine, having seen Bates loop a Grundy delivery to backward point on 38, took the score along to 89 for two after 15 overs.

She departed for 40, bowled by a brilliant Natasha Farrant inswinger, and Sara McGlashan followed soon after courtesy of a brilliant diving catch at backward point by Greenway off Brunt.

Amy Satterthwaite provided late impetus with 22 off 14 balls, including two fours and the second maximum of the innings, but she was one of two wickets to fall from the final two deliveries.

Wyatt took a smart catch at backward square to dismiss her off Shrubsole’s bowling before Greenway ran out Katey Martin.

England’s run-chase started poorly as Amy Jones pulled Lea Tahuhu to square-leg, but Edwards and Taylor steadied the ship, the skipper anchoring the innings while the latter again produced her trademark ramp shots.

They were coasting along until Edwards holed out to deep midwicket for 28, the first of four wickets for 26 runs, with Georgia Elwiss mis-timing a pull, Taylor bowled by Bates and Tammy Beaumont stumped advancing down the pitch.

Greenway and Wyatt took nine off the penultimate over to leave 10 to win off the final six balls and despite Bates bowling Wyatt, Sciver sealed the win in style.

Farrant in line to make ICC World Twenty20 debut   http://4theloveofsport.co.uk/2016/02/18/farrant-in-line-to-make-icc-womens-world-twenty20-debut/ Thu, 18 Feb 2016 09:00:12 +0000 http://4theloveofsport.co.uk/?p=11781 Continue Reading →

The ECB has today announced England’s 15 player squad for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20, which will be played alongside the men’s competition in India next month.

Charlotte Edwards will captain the side, which includes her Kent team-mate Natasha Farrant, who has been called-up for an ICC world event for the first time.

You can see an interview with Natasha Farrant here.

Farrant, a young left-arm seamer, arrived in Johannesburg on Sunday (14th February) to join the England women’s squad to play the three-match T20 International series against South Africa, which starts on Thursday (18th February) in Paarl.  After the disappointment of missing out on selection for the last ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in 2014, she says she is now fitter, stronger and excited by the challenge of playing in a world cup.

England Women’s Head Coach, Mark Robinson, said: “We are all looking forward to testing ourselves against the very best cricketers from across the world and playing the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in a cricket-mad country.  It will be a great experience for all of the players selected – both those who have had this opportunity before, and for the likes of Tash Farrant, selected for an ICC global event for the first time.  Tash really impressed during England women’s training camp to Sri Lanka before Christmas last year, and adds a different dimension to the bowling attack as a left-arm seamer.”

Twenty-year-old Farrant will join a seam bowling attack that will be spearheaded by the experienced new ball pairing of Katherine Brunt (Yorkshire) (pictured above) and Somerset’s Anya Shrubsole.  Shrubsole will be hoping to build on her impressive performance in the 2014 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, when she took 13 wickets and was named as player of the tournament.  Brunt, who has returned home from England women’s current tour in South Africa due to injury, is expected to be fit in time for the start of the tournament in March.

England’s ICC Women’s World Twenty20 campaign will get underway on Thursday 17th March, when they take on Bangladesh in Bangalore.
