Today, Thursday 16th July, The FA have announced that Chelsea have won the top two individual honours in the 2019-20 season of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Beth England, Chelsea striker, is awarded the Barclays Player of the Season, while Chelsea manager Emma Hayes lifts the prestigious Barclays Manager of the Season, having already led Chelsea to become winners of the season overall.

Beth England, Chelsea’s No.9, scored a wonder goal in the Blues’ 2019/20 opening game of the Barclays FA WSL season from 30-yards out in front of a huge crowd at Stamford Bridge against Tottenham Hotspur, resulting in a 1-0 victory. She went on to score a total of 14 goals in 15 appearances, top scoring for Chelsea for the second successive season.

Her manager, Emma Hayes, took the team through an undefeated season, with twelve wins and three draws with the team playing an attacking brand of football scoring 47 times, or more than three goals a game, conceding only 11 times. This ultimately led to Chelsea being awarded the title ahead of Manchester City based on a higher points per game average.

But it’s not all Chelsea glory as Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema wins Barclays Golden Boot, having scored 16 goals for Arsenal during the league campaign, more goals than anyone else throughout the series, while Manchester City’s Ellie Roebuck takes the Barclays Golden Glove, having taken over from England’s Karen Bardsley to keep ten clean sheets and win the award.

The winners were announced in a virtual award show presented by Barclays Football Ambassadors and England/Arsenal legends Ian Wright and Kelly Smith.

The FA has launched a new Sister Club Programme ahead of the new FA Women’s Super League (FA WSL) season.  More than £100,000 has been invested by the FA into the programme, which aims to drive girls’ participation at grassroots level and attendances at FA WSL matches.

Yeovil Town Ladies were one of 11 successful bids to take part this season, with other successful clubs including Arsenal, Birmingham City, Bristol City, Doncaster Rovers Belles, Everton, Notts County, Oxford United, Reading, Sheffield FC and Sunderland.

The Sister Club Programme will see girls’ clubs around the country to become affiliated with their local FA WSL club.  As part of the programme, Sister Clubs will gain access to hundreds of match tickets, player appearances, coaching sessions, camps and mascot places. There are two levels of affiliation – gold and silver.

The investment is for each member FA WSL club to employ a Programme Officer who will set up and run their programme and Yeovil Town Ladies are pleased to appoint 2016 captain Ellie Curson.

The 2016 FA WSL season kicks off on Wednesday 23 March with FA WSL 1 relegated side Bristol City Women, first up for Yeovil, but before that Yeovil face WSL1 side Sunderland AFC Ladies, in the SSE FA Women’s Cup on Sunday 20th March at Huish Park.

Yeovil_League_Promo_Assets_Digital_promo_graphics_CarouselFA head of women’s leagues and competitions Katie Brazier said: “This programme is a really innovative way to continue building on the league’s success and enable clubs to further grow their fanbases.

“We know that the success of the league in terms of both attendance and quality is driven by strong grassroots support and this programme will allow clubs to build this even further.

“We look forward to welcoming all the Sister Clubs and their players at FA WSL games throughout the season.”

In 2015 FA WSL attendances rose 48 per cent on the previous season, with the average league attendance per match reaching 1,076.

Grassroots clubs who are interested in becoming a Sister Club can find out more information by emailing sisterclub@yeoviltownladies.com
