Following this weekend’s Emirates FA Cup and Vitality Women’s FA Cup Finals, stars of non-league football Adam Boyes and Chloe Williams were presented with the inaugural Golden Ball Awards in partnership with Mitre as the top scorers in the respective competitions.

The awards were established to commemorate the top scorers in this season’s competitions, from the Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round and Vitality Women FA Cup First Round Qualifying.

Adam Boyes scored an incredible eleven goals for Northern Premier League Division One East side Marske United FC throughout the competition, with five coming in one match, and Chloe Williams had an equally impressive record, scoring 12 goals in four games for Liskeard Athletic and a remarkable seven in a single tie.

Liverpool’s legendary striker Ian Rush, who scored a record five goals across three Final victories, presented Adam’s award and Chloe received hers from Faye White who was a winner of the competition on nine occasions with Arsenal.

I’m delighted that we were able to introduce a top scorer award across historic seasons for both competitions. In Chloe and Adam, we have two worthy winners and in beating off some of the biggest names in football to claim their prize they’ve showcased exactly what makes these competitions so special.”

Baroness Sue Campbell, The FA’s Director of Women’s Football, added: “In what was an incredible weekend of football, featuring teams at the very pinnacle of our sport, we were thrilled that two top players from the lower leagues could have their thoroughly deserved moment in the spotlight. The 2022 Vitality Women’s FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City broke the record attendance for the Final of the competition, as a ‘landmark domestic season’ comes to a conclusion.

A crowd of 49,094 contributed to a fantastic atmosphere within Wembley Stadium connected by EE as they watched Chelsea win the competition for the fourth time. The previous record was set in 2018 when 45,423 were present to see Chelsea defeat Arsenal at the national stadium.

In a season that has seen game-changing broadcast deals for the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and unprecedented interest in the women’s game, this record attendance at Wembley Stadium highlights the momentum generated ahead of this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO in England.

Baroness Sue Campbell, The FA’s Director of Women’s Football said: “That was a special day for the women’s game. The atmosphere in and around the stadium from early this morning has been absolutely fantastic, it’s exactly the sort of occasion we hoped for when we committed to hosting the Final at Wembley Stadium every season. The picture of Olympic Way packed with families, friends, girls and boys is an image that will live with me for a long time.

“This has been a landmark domestic season for women’s football. We have seen a huge growth in TV and digital audiences throughout the season and nearly 50,000 at Wembley today shows the appetite to attend live women’s football in this country. I’m delighted they’ve been rewarded with a great spectacle between two top teams.

The momentum certainly doesn’t stop here. After a fascinating FA Women’s National League Play-off Final next Saturday, there’s a hugely exciting summer ahead. A major tournament on home soil provides us with an incredible opportunity to not only drive participation, refereeing, and coaching but also be even more ambitious with our desire to grow the fanbase. Days like this are just part of the journey, not the end.”

Four North East schools are on their way to Wembley – thanks to Vision for Education and Durham Women.

The FA Women’s Championship club have been partnered with the leading educational recruitment company since 2014, in what is now one of the longest-running shirt sponsorship deals in the country.

Since the relationship began, the club and Vision for Education have sent hundreds of children to England’s national stadium to watch international or cup final fixtures.

And that is continuing in 2022, with 50 pupils and members of staff from across the region given free tickets and travel to watch the Vitality Women’s FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester City on Sunday, May 15.

They will be joining a bumper crowd at Wembley Stadium, with over 40,000 tickets already sold for the showpiece event.

The excited students from Consett Academy, Durham Johnston, Belmont Community School and Farringdon Community Academy were presented with their tickets by Durham Women midfielder and Northern Ireland international Sarah Robson.

Vision for Education Branch Manager Paul Hillas said: “We are delighted we can offer students from schools in the Durham and Sunderland local authorities a once in a lifetime experience and visit the new Wembley Stadium to watch the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final.

“Having been unable to do this for the past two seasons during COVID, we are thrilled that we can give back to the students in the schools we work closely with.

“Thanks to our partnership with Durham Women we are able to offer students an experience and day out they will never forget!

“We hope that by doing this, more girls will become interested in football and it will go some way to help create football stars of the future.”

Durham Women Marketing Officer Mark Donnelly added: “This is always one of the highlights of the year, and seeing the excitement of the pupils is brilliant.

“It’s great that we can work with Vision for Education on exciting initiatives like this to give pupils in the region the chance to experience such a big fixture at Wembley.
