Team Bath Tennis player Alicia Barnett and partner Olivia Nicholls have been drawn against Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova in their opening women’s doubles match at Wimbledon 2023.

It is a challenging draw for the Brits against the number 9 seeds for the tournament, with Kudermetova having reached the final with Elena Vesnina on her last appearance at the All England Club in 2021.

The match is scheduled to be played when the doubles competitions get under way on Wednesday (5th July).

It is a second successive Wimbledon for Barnett, from Painswick in Gloucestershire, and Nicholls – Britain’s leading women’s doubles partnership – who reached the second round on their debut in 2022.

Barnett, coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village, will also contest the mixed doubles, an event in which she reached the quarter-finals last year.

Team Bath Tennis player Alicia Barnett and women’s doubles partner Olivia Nicholls began their grass-court season by reaching the final of the Lexus Surbiton Trophy.

The duo, ranked number three for the tournament, were in fine form throughout the week as they eased through the knockout rounds without dropping a set.

A 6-1 7-6(4) victory over fellow Brits Harriet Dart and Heather Watson was followed up with a well-earned 7-6(3) 7-5 success against Quinn Gleason of the United States and France’s Elixane Lechemia.

Barnett, coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village, and Nicholls sealed a place in their second final of the year with a 6-4 6-4 defeat of Britain’s Emily Appleton and Germany’s Julia Lohoff.

Number four seeds Sophie Chang, of the US, and Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer awaited in the trophy decider and it proved to be a close first set, going with serve until the tenth game when a decisive break saw Barnett and Nicholls go behind for the first time all week.

The second set then got away from them as Chang and Wickmayer – who completed a title double by winning the women’s singles – wrapped up a 6-4 6-1 victory.

Barnett and Nicholls now move to the Nottingham Tennis Centre where their Wimbledon preparations continue with the Rothesay Open, the duo facing Appleton and Jodie Burrage in the first round.

Liam Broady, who is coached by Team Bath Tennis coach David Sammel, is also competing in Nottingham having won his first-ever ATP Challenger Tour doubles title at Surbiton by teaming up with Jonny O’Mara to beat Alexei Popyrin and Aleksandar Vukic 6-4 5-7 10-8 in the men’s doubles final.

Alicia Barnett’s French Open debut ended in a first-round defeat on Wednesday but only after a near three-hour battle from the Team Bath Tennis player and women’s doubles partner Olivia Nicholls at Roland Garros.

The British duo, appearing at their fourth Grand Slam in 11 months, narrowly lost a first-set tie-break to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini and Martina Trevisan but stormed back brilliantly to win the second set 6-1.

An absorbing third set saw Barnett and Nicholls recover from an early break to level at 4-4 before Paolini and Trevisan won the last two games, saving a break point, to edge the match 7-6(5) 1-6 6-4 after two hours and 39 minutes of terrific tennis on Court 11.

A first set full of momentum swings established the tone, with Barnett and Nicholls being broke in their second and third service games but responding immediately on both occasions.

An epic 11th game lasting almost nine minutes went to deuce four times and saw the Brits save a break point before eventually going 6-5 up. Paolini and Trevisan took the set to a tie-break, though, and a double fault on set point ensured the Italians came out on top 7-5.

Barnett – coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village – and Nicholls quickly put that disappointment behind them as they broke to love in the opening game of the second set. They went on to break twice more during a dominant spell and win 6-1 to take the match to a decisive third set.

It was Paolini and Trevisan’s turn to break to love in the opening game and regain the initiative but Barnett and Nicolls hit back in the eighth game, converting their third break point to level at 4-4.

However, the Italians broke again and then saved a break point in their last service game to finally see off the battling Brits, who will now turn their attention to the grass-court season and Wimbledon.

Team Bath Tennis star Alicia Barnett and partner Olivia Nicholls earned a deserved consolation win for Great Britain with another dazzling doubles performance on the Billie Jean King Cup international stage.

Britain’s hopes of progressing to the Finals later this year had been dashed by the time Barnett and Nicholls took to the Coventry Building Society Arena court as a strong France team won three hard-fought singles matches.

However, the doubles duo were determined to finish the tie on a high and did so in fantastic fashion, battling back from 8-2 down in the decisive third-set tie-break to beat world No.14 Kristina Mladenovic and Clara Burel 7-5 3-6 11-9.

Barnett, coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village, and Nicholls had also come from 5-3 down in the first set as they took their Billie Jean King Cup record to three wins from four rubbers.

Team Bath Tennis ace Alicia Barnett says helping Great Britain reach their first Billie Jean King Cup semi-final in more than 40 years was an “incredible experience”.

Barnett, coached by Ian MacDonald at the University of Bath, and doubles partner Olivia Nicholls were instrumental as GB progressed through the group stages, winning both of their matches in straight sets to the delight of 4,000-strong crowds at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.

The GB debutants then went mighty close to clinching a place in the final, taking Storm Sanders and Sam Stosur – both Grand Slam champions – to a third-set tie-break before the experienced Australian duo eventually edged through.

“It has been an absolutely incredible week,” said Barnett. “The result on Saturday was devastating but it is safe to say we left everything out on court and if you’d told us a week ago we’d reach the semi-finals we’d have probably taken it.

“Playing for Britain was so exciting, there were so many highlights. One of the major ones was getting to know the other girls in the team, we all got along so well and everyone did incredibly. I was up and down in my seat watching from the sidelines, cheering them on and losing my voice.

“I absolutely loved playing in front of the British crowd too, especially seeing all the little kids there being inspired. I hadn’t really played in front of a big crowd before Wimbledon this year and my mixed doubles partner, Jonny O’Mara, loves to get the fans involved so ever since then I’ve tried to be more relaxed on court and engage with the crowd. It is such an adrenaline rush when you have that connection and hear that noise.”

Barnett and Nicholls have forged an excellent doubles partnership over the past couple of seasons, sending them soaring up the world rankings, and were selected to make their GB debuts together in Glasgow as LTA Colour Holders No.320 and No.321.

They got off to a stunning start, clinching a valuable point in the 2-1 Group C opening defeat to Kazakhstan with a 7-5 6-3 win over Elena Rybakina and Anna Danilina.

That kept GB’s semi-final qualification hopes alive but they needed a 3-0 win over Spain to achieve that – something the quartet of Heather Watson, Harriet Dart, Barnett and Nicholls completed in glorious style, with a 7-6(5) 6-2 doubles win over Aliona Bolsova and Rebeka Masarova sealing top spot in the group overall.

Australia awaited in GB’s first semi-final since 1981 and it was all square going into the decisive doubles rubber, which saw Barnett and Nicholls take on Sanders – ranked eighth in the world – and former US Open champion Stosur.

An epic encounter saw the Brits battle back from a set and a break down to force a championship tie-break but the Australians narrowly edged it to secure a 7-6(1) 6-7(5) 10-6 victory.

Alicia Barnett’s “incredible” 2022 has continued after the Team Bath Tennis ace was today added to the Great Britain team for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, taking place at Glasgow Emirates Arena from 8-13 November.

It will be a first appearance in the world’s largest annual women’s international team sports competition – formerly known as the Fed Cup – for Barnett, who has risen to become the British number one women’s doubles player after a fantastic season.

Barnett, coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village, began the year at 184 in the WTA world rankings but has progressed to a career-high of 60 after a number of breakthrough performances with women’s doubles partner Olivia Nicholls, who has also been called into the GB team.

They have reached a number of international finals and won their first WTA 250 title in August at the Granby National Bank Championships in Canada. They also made their first Grand Slam appearances at Wimbledon and the US Open, with Barnett reaching the mixed doubles quarter-finals at SW19 with Jonny O’Mara.

“It’s an honour to represent my country and I’m so excited my first Billie Jean King Cup is going to be in Britain,” said Barnett. “I had big dreams as a little kid and now I’m out here living those dreams, so this is a really special moment.

“I’m really looking forward to competing in a team event, especially on home ground with a home crowd. Let’s see if I can lose my voice from cheering my team-mates on!

“This year has been incredible with so many highs. Competing in two Grand Slams and being picked to represent GB has made it a year I will never forget. I’m so grateful for my doubles partner, Liv and our team. A special thanks to my coach Macca and the rest of Team Bath for their continuing support. Together we have worked hard to achieve the goals we set for ourselves.”

Great Britain will face Kazakhstan and Spain in Group Stage C of the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals, on Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th November respectively, with the four group winners qualifying for the semi-finals.

Alicia Barnett’s memorable Wimbledon debut campaign came to an end on Tuesday as the Team Bath Tennis ace and partner Jonny O’Mara were beaten in their mixed doubles quarter-final.

The Australian pairing of Matthew Ebden and Samantha Stosur, who had beaten the number one seeds in the previous round, proved to be too strong as they recorded a 6-3 6-1 victory on Court 2.

However, it was another tremendous experience for Barnett – coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village – who got to play five matches on the world-famous grass courts during her debut Grand Slam championships.

As well as reach the second round of the women’s doubles with Olivia Nicholls, only losing out in a third-set tie-break, Barnett also enjoyed a brilliant mixed doubles competition with O’Mara which included an incredible 18-16 tie-break victory over Jamie Murray and Venus Williams in the second round on Sunday.

“It’s been insane, absolutely insane,” said Barnett. “I didn’t have any expectations going into Wimbledon, I just wanted to appreciate time on court and I have to say I’ve loved every minute of it. I think that’s reflected in the performances.

“It’s been a privilege to play in front of a home crowd, especially in my first Grand Slam, and have so many friends and family and the support from Team Bath has been brilliant.”

The indoor and outdoor courts at the University of Bath that Barnett trains on are available for public hire throughout the year. Visit teambath.com/tennis/play to find out more.

Team Bath Tennis player Alicia Barnett and partner Olivia Nicholls enjoyed a winning Wimbledon debut on Wednesday as they progressed to the second round of the women’s doubles in fine style.

Barnett, coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village, and Nicholls produced a brilliant performance on Court 6 as they beat the vastly-experienced duo of Kaia Kanepi and Renata Voracova 6-1 4-6 6-2.

Rain delayed the start of the match for two hours but the Brits – playing at their first Grand Slam event – showed no signs of nerves and quickly found their stride, rattling off the first five games on their way to taking the first set.

The second set was more closely contested, with Barnett and Nicholls being broken for the first time before immediately hitting back. It remained with serve until an epic 10th game when, after going to deuce five times, Kanepi and Voracova finally forced another break to take the set 6-4.

Estonian Kanepi and Czech Voracova, who have played in 87 Grand Slam women’s doubles competitions between them, had a chance to go an early break up in the decisive set when they went 40-0 up on Barnett’s serve.

However, the Team Bath Tennis star kept her nerve superbly to hold serve and the Brits rode that momentum to grab a break in the next game. They now firmly had the initiative and went on to take the set 6-2, sealing an impressive win.

It continued an excellent season for Barnett and Nicholls, which has included a biggest success of their careers to date – winning the W60 Bellinzona title on clay in Switzerland – and reaching the Lyon Open final in France on their WTA Tour debut. That saw Barnett achieve a career-high world doubles ranking of 100 earlier this month.

Team Bath Tennis ace Alicia Barnett and doubles partner Olivia Nicholls claimed the biggest tournament success of their careers to date as they won the W60 Bellinzona title on clay in Switzerland.

The result sees Barnett, coached by Ian MacDonald, move up to a career-high doubles ranking of 119 in the world and number three in Great Britain.

The British duo, who reached the Lyon Open final on their WTA Tour debut last month, were number one seeds for the ITF World Tennis Tour event in Switzerland and lived up to that billing, only losing one set on their way to the final.

After beating the home pairing of Natalia Vikhlyantseva and Simona Waltert 6-3 7-6(4), Barnett and Nicholls overcame Switzerland’s Jenny Duerst and Carole Monnet of France 6-1 3-6 10-8 before defeating former Team Bath junior Emily Webley-Smith and her Swiss partner Leonie Kung 6-1 7-6(3) in the semi-finals.

That set up a trophy showdown with Swiss number two seeds Xenia Knoll and Oksana Selekhmeteva, who took the first set before the Brits battled back brilliantly to claim their first-ever W60 title with a 6-7(7) 6-4 10-7 success.
