Some of the country’s top tennis players are in action at the University of Bath this week as Team Bath Tennis once again proudly hosts the Aegon British Tour event for both men and ladies.

This year’s open-entry singles competition has a combined prize fund of £3,200 and is, for the first time in Bath, a Tier 1 event meaning it has attracted a stronger overall field.

Aegon British Tour events take place throughout the year and provide professional, university and stronger junior players the opportunity for accessible match play at a good level.

There is an extremely strong local entry in this week’s tournament with 26 players who train at Team Bath with the Academy or University performance programme taking part.

James Mitchell, Mark Rushton-Woods, Matt Sumers, Millen Hurrion, Amelia Stuart and Maria Budin all came through qualifying rounds on Monday and Tuesday to secure a place in the main draw.

Wednesday’s first round includes three all Team Bath clashes – James Davis v Imran Aswat, Maria Budin v Megan Davies, and Tiarnan Brady v James Mitchell.

Team Bath duo Lisa Whybourn – a former winner of the event – and Eden Richardson, a MJ Church sporting ambassador, have received byes into the second round on account of their world rankings and will start their campaigns on Thursday.

Play is taking place across the eight indoor courts at the Sports Training Village and all matches are free to watch, with the finals taking place on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, Team Bath MCTA ace Marcus Daniell is through to the second round of the men’s doubles at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Daniell and partner Marcelo Demoliner, who reached the semi-finals of the ASB Classic in New Zealand last week, were 7-6(2) 6-4 winners against Guillermo Duran and Joao Sousa on Wednesday.

They now could potentially face number six seeds Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram should they come through their first-round match against Aliaksandr Bury and Paolo Lorenzi.

Rio 2016 Olympian Daniell, coached by Dave Sammel and Ian MacDonald at the University of Bath, is appearing at his eighth successive Grand Slam tournament.

Ana Bogdan provided a fitting finale to a week of top-class tennis at the University of Bath as she won the $25k Aegon GB Pro-Series women’s singles title.

The Romanian justified her billing as number one seed after overcoming the number two seed, Croatia’s Ana Vrljic, in a final that lasted more than two hours at the Sports Training Village.

Bogdan, ranked 161 in the world, won the opening set 6-3 but Vrljic hit back to take the second 6-4.

That was the first set that Bogdan had dropped all week but she responded brilliantly by winning the decisive set 6-1 to secure her third $25k singles title of the year.

The match concluded a week of high-quality competition which saw former Wimbledon and US Open junior champion Filip Peliwo of Canada win the $15k men’s singles title.

There were British winners in both the doubles competitions – Lloyd Glasspool and Joshua Ward-Hibbert lifted the men’s title, while Olivia Nicholls and former Team Bath Tennis player Sarah Beth Askew took the women’s crown.

And there was plenty for the home fans to cheer, with University of Bath student Emma Hurst producing two fantastic wins to reach the main draw of the women’s singles.

Team Bath MCTA’s Lisa Whybourn reached the women’s doubles final with Freya Christie and Richard Gabb was a semi-finalist in both the men’s singles and doubles competitions.

Barry Scollo, Director of Tennis for Team Bath MCTA, said: “It was a great eight days of tennis and congratulations to Filip and Ana on their well-deserved singles wins.

“It was particularly pleasing to see so many of our players involved all the way through the week. Emma’s two career-high wins were fantastic and it was great to see Lisa back on court and playing so well.

“Richard has been with the Academy for many years and that was the furthest that any of our players have ever progressed in the singles here in Bath, he played really well throughout.”

Former Wimbledon and US Open junior champion Filip Peliwo has followed in the footsteps of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nicolas Mahut by winning the Aegon GB Pro-Series $15k men’s singles tennis title at the University of Bath.

Peliwo, the number three seed from Canada, battled back brilliantly from losing the first set to beat Germany’s Mats Moraing 2-6 6-1 6-2 at the Sports Training Village on Saturday.

After his second title win of 2015, Peliwo said: “It has not been the best of years for me but it is nice to finish it with a title. I have had a good week and really enjoyed being in Bath.”

Moraing had reached the final by overcoming number one seed Tom Kocevar-Desman of Slovenia in the last eight before ending the run of Team Bath MCTA’s Richard Gabb in the semi-finals, winning 6-4 6-7 6-0.

Peliwo, who also runner-up at the Australian and French Opens during his outstanding junior career, was contesting his second final in as many days at the University of Bath.

He and Ireland’s Sam Barry missed out on the men’s doubles title to Britain’s Lloyd Glasspool and Joshua Ward-Hibbert, who won Friday’s final 6-4 3-6 10-2.

There were a couple of familiar faces in the women’s doubles final on Saturday, with former Team Bath Tennis player Sarah Beth Askew and partner Olivia Nicholls (pictured above) coming from behind to claim the title.

Team Bath MCTA’s Lisa Whybourn and partner Freya Christie – who had won their three previous doubles finals this year – took the first set 6-1 but Askew and Nicholls won the second 6-4 before winning the tie-break 10-2.

An entertaining week of competition will conclude on Sunday with the $25k women’s singles final between the top two seeds – Ana Bodgan of Romania and Croatia’s Ana Vrljic.

Bogdan’s semi-final was cut short as opponent Gioia Barbieri of Italy retired with an injury after losing the first four games.

Vrljic had to work hard to book her place in the final, eventually beating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 2-6 6-4 6-4.

The final will start at 10.30am on Sunday and entry is free to spectators.

Team Bath MCTA’s Richard Gabb is one win away from reaching the Aegon GB Pro-Series men’s singles final after serving up another treat for home fans at the University of Bath on Thursday.

The 23-year-old overcame Ireland’s Sam Barry 6-4 2-6 7-5 in front of an appreciative crowd at the Sports Training Village on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the $15k tournament.

Standing between him and Saturday’s final is Germany’s Mat Moraing, who beat number one seed Tom Kocevar-Desman of Slovenia 6-4 6-1.

Friday’s other semi-final will be between the number two and three seeds, Belgium’s Joris De Loore and Canada’s Filip Peliwo respectively.

De Loore overcame compatriot Michael Geerts 6-2 6-3, while Peliwo – a former Wimbledon and US Open junior champion – came from behind to beat Britain’s Luke Bambridge 1-6 7-5 6-3.

Peliwo, partnered by Sam Barry, was victorious against Bambridge again in the men’s doubles semi-final, beating him and Jonny O’Mara 7-5 6-4.

There was disappointment for Gabb and partner Scott Clayton in the other semi as they went down 6-4 6-1 to fellow Brits Lloyd Glasspool and Joshua Warb-Hibbert.

The final will take place on Court 1 on Friday afternoon, after the conclusion of the two men’s semi-finals.

There is still plenty of home interest in the women’s doubles after Team Bath MCTA’s Lisa Whybourn and partner Freya Christie beat Dutch duo Indy De Vroome and Arantxa Rus 6-3 0-6 10-6 in a rollercoaster quarter-final.

Team Bath Tennis player Sarah Beth Askew and partner Olivia Nicholls are also through to Friday’s semi-finals after their 6-2 7-5 win over fellow Brits Emily Arbuthnott and Ema Lazic.

Whybourn’s progress in the doubles provided some consolation for her earlier 6-3 6-3 defeat to Georgia’s Mariam Bolkvadze in the last 16 of the $25k women’s singles.

That means Christie, her doubles partner, is the only remaining Brit in the competition after her 6-4 7-5 win over Italian number eight seed Alice Matteucci.

With only three seeds left in the draw, Friday’s quarter-finals promise to deliver more exciting and intriguing matches.

The action gets under way at 11am and entry to spectators is free once again.

All the results from Thursday:

Filip Peliwo (CAN) [3]     1-6 7-5 6-3     Luke Bambridge (GBR)

There is plenty of home interest on Court 1 at the University of Bath Sports Training Village on Thursday as the Aegon GB Pro-Series tennis tournament reaches its latter stages.

Team Bath MCTA’s Lisa Whybourn is first on court as she looks to reach the last eight of the women’s $25k competition.

Her match against Georgia’s Mariam Bolkvadze will be followed by a men’s quarter-final between Ireland’s Sam Barry and Richard Gabb, another Team Bath MCTA player.

Both will also contest their doubles competitions in the afternoon, with Gabb and partner Scott Clayton – the number one seeds – looking to book their place in the final.

Whybourn made the most of her wildcard entry to the women’s singles main draw by recording an impressive 6-3 6-4 victory over number eight seed Dia Evtimova of Bulgaria on Wednesday.

University of Bath student Emma Hurst, who had battled through two qualifying rounds to reach the last 32, saw her excellent run ended by number two seed Ana Vrljic, the Croatian winning 6-0 6-1.

The only other British player to join Whybourn in the last 16 was Freya Christie, whose reward for a 6-4 6-2 win over Greece’s Despina Papamichail is a meeting with Italy’s Alice Matteuci on Court 2.

Christie is also Whybourn’s partner in the women’s doubles and they showed great spirit to beat the number three seeds – Belgium’s Elyne Boeykens and Nora Niedmers of Germany – 2-6 6-2 10-4 on Wednesday. They will now face Dutch duo Indy De Vroome and Arantxa Rus in the quarter-finals.

The men’s $15k singles competition saw all seven remaining seeds win their matches on Wednesday, meaning the standard of play promises to be extremely high in the quarter-finals.

Gabb eased to a 6-1 6-4 win over Jonny O’Mara on Wednesday and will be looking to continue his fine form against number six seed Barry.

The Team Bath MCTA player had to dig deep to reach the men’s doubles semi-finals with Clayton after a battle against Belgium’s Joris De Loore and Michael Geerts. The Brits lost the first set 6-1 but took the second 7-6 before winning the decisive third-set tie-break 10-7.

Gabb and Clayton will now face fellow Brits Lloyd Glasspool and Joshua Ward-Hibbert for a place in the final.

In total, 18 matches will take place at the Sports Training Village on Thursday, with the action getting under way at 10am.

University of Bath tennis ace Emma Hurst will be looking to continue her winning form on home turf when she faces the number two seed in the Aegon GB Pro-Series women’s $25k tournament on Wednesday.

And there will also be local interest in the men’s singles as Team Bath MCTA’s Richard Gabb looks to book his place in the quarter-finals of the $15k competition.

Sport & Exercise Science student Hurst, a 2014-15 Trendell Sport Scholar and Dual Career athlete, has reached the main draw after battling through two exciting qualifying matches at the Sports Training Village this week.

Her reward for Tuesday’s battling 7-6(5) 6-3 victory over Mexico’s Sabastiani Leon is a round-of-32 meeting with Croatia’s Ana Vrljic, the entrant with the second-highest world ranking.

Number one seed Ana Bogdan, of Romania, starts her title challenge against Norway’s Melanie Stokke, while Tara Moore, the highest-ranked Brit, faces Belgian teenager Greet Minnen.

The men’s $15k tournament reaches the last 16 stage, with Gabb taking on fellow Brit Jonny O’Mara in the afternoon session.

Gabb was involved in a tough match against Belgium’s Laurens Verboven on Tuesday, with the initiative regularly changing hands during the first set, but went on to record a solid 6-4 6-3 victory.

Number one seed Tom Kocevar-Desman of Slovenia needed three sets to get past Germany’s Tom Schonenberg – he faces British player Lloyd Glasspool in the afternoon. There is also an all-British match between Luke Bambridge and Joel Cannell.

The women’s doubles competition gets under way, with Team Bath MCTA’s Lisa Whybourn and partner Freya Christie among those in action.

Gabb and Scott Clayton are the number one seeds in the men’s doubles, which has reached the quarter-final stages.

In all there are 36 matches scheduled across six courts on Wednesday, with the action getting under way at 10am. Entry is free to spectators.

Play will halt at 11am so that players, officials and fans can observe a two-minute Armistice Day silence.

Live scoring will be available at here and the full order of play can be found here, along with the results so far.

After two hard-fought days of qualification, the last 32 men are now in place and all 16 first-round matches will take place during another busy day of competition at the Sports Training Village at the University of Bath.

Number one seed Tom Kocevar-Desman of Slovenia will start his title bid against Germany’s Tom Schonenberg, while Joris De Loore – the number two seed from Belgium – faces British qualifier Mark Whitehouse.

Neil Pauffley, fresh from winning last week’s Aegon GB Pro-Series Tennis Event in Taunton, faces number three seed Filip Peliwo.

The highest-ranked British player is Team Bath MCTA’s Richard Gabb and the number four seed will be hoping for plenty of home support when he plays Belgium’s Laurens Verboven on Court 2.
