Two trophies were up for grabs as the the WRLA Winter League came to a finale, with Huddersfield  St Joes looking to retain the Plate against Hunslet Warriors, followed by the Challenge Cup game between Wigan St Pats and Stanningley.

In the first match of the day Hunslet, after a good first half against Huddersfield St Joes, ran out of steam in the second half .  The scoreline makes the game look one-sided but Hunslet battled hard and lost out to a stronger side with Huddersfield holding on to the trophy for another year.

The Challenge Cup was a closer match with Wigan St Pats edging Stanningly to win by just two points.

In the other Women’s Challenge cup Semi Final played on Sunday, Leigh Miners Rangers welcomed Army Ladies RL and the game went right down to the wire with Leigh grabbing the win with three minutes left on the clock 16-14.

Leigh Miners Georgia Sutherland scored two tries and Nicholette Postlethwaite scored one. Emily Mullen converted one of the tries and then three minutes from time she kept a cool head to slot the match winning penalty goal.

The Army Ladies tries were scored by Tony Tompkins, who scored twice and one for Laura Latimer, Emma Farmer-Campbell added one conversion.

In the Women’s Challenge Shield Semi Final, Normanton Knights hosted Thatto Heath St Helens Reserves and it was Thatto who progressed to the final with a 34-8 win. Thatto’s Tara Jones and Charlotte Hill both scored two tries each and there were further tries for Jade Ward, Chloe Hammond and Naomi Williams. Rachel Thompson added three goals. Normanton’s two tries were scored by Katie Hepworth and Chloe Brown.

Which gives us a Challenge Cup line up of: Thatto Heath St Helens v Leigh Miners Rangers and Challenge Shield: Whitley Bay Barbarians v St Helens Reserves.

On Sunday the first round of the Challenge Cup took place in the women’s league, Stanningley Ladies hosted Bradford Bulls and it was the travelling side who emerged with a 58-6 victory. Bradford’s Amy Hardcastle and Shona Hoyle both scored three tries each, Rhiannon Marshall and Stacey White both scored twice. There was one try each for Charlene Hennigan, Lois Forsell and Jess Courtman, Courtman also converted four tries. Stanningley’s Heather McDonald scored their try with Tasha Gaines adding the conversion.

Selby Warriors were at home to Army RL Ladies and the home side lost out 16-22.

Leigh Miners Rangers welcomed Brighouse Rangers and the home side powered to a 58-0 victory. Georgia Sutherland led the charge with four tries and one goal, there was two tries each for Grace Morley and Serena Tamou. Rhian Boag, Jenna Banks and Emily Mullen all scored one try each and Mullen added four goals. The player of the match for Leigh Miners was winger Grace Morley.

Thatto Heah St Helens made the journey to Normanton Knights and it was another away cup win with Thatto progressing to the next round with a 62-4 score.
