Team Bath Tennis players Toby Samuel and Alicia Barnett have gained more invaluable Grand Slam experience after competing at Wimbledon 2023.

It was a first-ever Grand Slam for Samuel, who enjoyed a dream senior debut on the world-famous grass courts as he and men’s doubles partner Connor Thompson beat Pedro Cachin (Argentina) and Yannick Hanfmann (Germany) 7-5 6-3 on Thursday.

Weather delays meant they had to wait four days for their second-round match against number five seeds Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico) and Edouard Roger-Vasselin (France), which was played on No 2 Court.

Samuel and Thompson, who both play college tennis at the University of South Carolina, produced some excellent tennis on the big stage before their vastly-experienced opponents eventually came through 6-3 7-6(4).

It was a second Wimbledon for fellow Team Bath Tennis player Barnett but a frustrating one as she suffered two first-round exits in one afternoon on Court 6.

Barnett and partner Olivia Nicholls didn’t begin their ladies doubles campaign until Friday and they faced a last-minute change of opponents due to Veronika Kudermetova’s singles commitments.

They instead faced Brazilian duo Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Lidziya Marozava, who hit the ground running and quickly won the first set 6-0.

Barnett – coached by Ian MacDonald at the Team Bath Sports Training Village – and Nicholls rallied in the second set, earning an early break, but they couldn’t capitalise on it and were beaten 6-0 6-3.

There was more frustration a couple of hours later as Barnett returned to Court 6 with Julian Cash for a mixed doubles first-round match against Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Bernarda Pera of the United States.

The British duo lost the first set 6-4 but hit back to win the second on a tie-break and went a break up in the third. Mektic and Pera responded immediately, though, and went on to edge a decisive tie-break 10-7 to secure a hard-earned 6-4 6-7(5) 7-6(7) victory.

Liam Broady, who is coached by Team Bath Tennis coach David Sammel, produced arguably the biggest shock of the tournament as he beat Norwegian fourth seed Casper Ruud 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-0 during an incredible second-round match on Centre Court. His run was ended by Denis Shapovalov the following day.

Team Bath MCTA Tennis player Anna Smith is celebrating arguably the best result of her career after she and mixed doubles partner Neal Skupski beat the number one seeds at Wimbledon.

The unseeded Smith and Skupski looked to be heading for a valiant second-round exit to Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Sania Mirza of Indonesia when they trailed 5-2 in the third and final set.

However, the Brits then reeled off five successive games – saving two match points along the way – to claim an outstanding 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory in front of a delighted crowd on Court 18.

Barry Scollo, Director of Tennis at Team Bath, said: “That may be our best-ever result in doubles, what a performance by Anna and Neal.

“Mirza has been one of the best doubles player in the world during the past two years, certainly in her ladies’ doubles partnership with Martina Hingis.

“We are very proud of Anna and her coaches, Dave Sammel and Ian MacDonald, they have all worked extremely hard and the results are showing.”

Smith had overcome a familiar face in the first round of the mixed competition on Monday, beating ladies’ doubles partner Jocelyn Rae and Colin Fleming 6-1 1-6 6-3.

The third round will see Smith and Skupski face either Julian Knowle and Shuai Zhang or number 14 seeds Aisam Qureshi and Yaroslava Shvedova.

Rising Team Bath MCTA Tennis star Eden Richardson has been handed a wildcard into the girls’ singles draw at Junior Wimbledon.

And she could be joined at SW19 by Megan Davies, who will be looking to build on some impressive recent results when she competes in the qualifying tournament on Thursday and Friday.

Richardson, a 17-year-old Ralph Allen School pupil, missed out on a singles place in the qualifying stages last year but did get to play at Wimbledon in the girls’ doubles.

She goes into next week’s prestigious tournament on the back of an excellent victory at the Nike Junior International in Nottingham. She also reached the last 16 in Roehampton this week.

Barry Scollo, Director of Tennis, said: “It’s brilliant news for Eden and really well deserved, she has been a great player for Team Bath.

“She moved from Liverpool with her mom to be part of the set-up here and has made a lot of sacrifices. She also works incredibly hard and we are looking forward to seeing what she can achieve next week.”

Davies, who attends Prior Park School and is hoping to make her Wimbledon debut this year, recorded one of the best results of her fledgling career this week as she beat World number 37 Lara Escauriza of Paraguay 6-2 7-5 in Roehampton before losing 6-4 6-4 in a hard-fought second-round match against Poland’s Iga Swiatek.

Meanwhile, Team Bath MCTA’s senior players have been handed tricky draws in the senior Wimbledon tournament as they prepare to start their doubles competitions.

Anna Smith and partner Jocelyn Rae have been drawn against Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, the number four seeds, in round one of the ladies’ doubles.

Marcus Daniell will start his men’s doubles campaign with Brian Baker against the number 13 seeds from Colombia, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.
