Currently five points behind leaders Surbiton, second-placed Hampstead & Westminster have a great chance to close the gap when they face their rivals in the Investec Women’s Hockey League on Saturday.

Hampstead currently boast the best attack in the league this season, averaging 3.25 goals per game. But they face a Surbiton side with the best defensive record, having conceded just over one goal per game.

“We’re really excited about the game on Saturday. The squad is at full strength and of course, it’s great to have the GB girls with us,” said Hampstead co-captain Katherine Baker.

“We know Surbiton will be a tough opposition – their record in the league speaks for itself – but we’re focused on our hockey and excited to show what we’re made of.

“We’ve had a strong start to our first season in the Premier Division, and this weekend is another great opportunity for us to play some high quality hockey and go into battle at the top of the table. It should be a great one for the fans!”

Third-placed Holcombe play host to bottom of the table Bowdon Hightown as they bid to stay in the play-off places, while fourth-placed Buckingham have a home game against an East Grinstead who are currently fifth but could leap-frog them with a win.

Loughborough Students could also move into the top four if they win at Clifton Robinsons and other results go in their favour, while the University of Birmingham go to Beeston in the day’s other top flight match.

Unbeaten Wimbledon head to Cambridge City in the Investec Division One South on Saturday, as they look to make it seven wins in a row.

Meanwhile, second-placed Reading are also on the road with a trip to Berkshire rivals Slough.

And in the Investec Division One North leaders Swansea go to bottom of the table Belper, while the University of Durham are second and go to Brooklands-Poynton in search of a fifth win.

The Army women hit the goal trail as they mounted an emphatic defence of their Inter-Services hockey crown in Aldershot.

Having dominated the tournament in recent seasons there appeared to be little sign of an upset as the soldiers plundered 25 goals against their Forces rivals to record two comfortable wins.

A tight opening spell against the Royal Navy masked the carnage that was to come as the Reds effortlessly moved through the gears and surged to a 15-1 victory.

An early strike from skipper WO2 Sharon Stones [REME] started the rout but the Senior Service found parity from a penalty corner.

However, the successful conversion proved to be a rare foray downfield for the visitors as Capt Cheryl Valentine [AMS] set about building a lead.

The officer hit a 15-minute hat-trick to put her side firmly in control and further strikes from Sgt Amanda Potgieter [REME] amd Capt Emma Lee-Smith [AAC] saw the defending champions open a 6-1 advantage at the break.

The onslaught continued in the second half as Valentine took her tally to six, while Lee-Smith completed her hat-trick with some clinical finishing from the edge of the D.

A bace from Maj Nic George [R Signals] and further goals from Stones and Potgieter completed the win.

“This game gave us the chance to develop some of the things we have been working on in training” Stones said at full-time.

“The Navy came at us pretty strong in the first ten minutes but a lot of our girls are now playing regular civvy hockey so we knew we would be OK.

“There were a few people who were experiencing the Inter-Services competition for the first time and they did not look out of place.

“Although we have won well today, we have not been complacent.  We come into this tournament with the same attitude every season; when you are wearing that Army shirt you want to do well.”

The team downed the Royal Air Force 10-0 a day later to retain their title.
