This new position is intended to be held by former players of significant standing who can bring their experience, credibility and profile to the RPA’s work. Danny and Sue’s advice to the RPA team will inform its leadership and decision making, as well as reinforcing its connection to retired players.
They will both advise the main RPA Board and will also be invited to provide guidance to the two players boards – The Men’s Rugby Board and The Women’s Rugby Board.
Danny is one of England’s most accomplished scrum-halves, earning more than 100 caps for England and enjoying a distinguished club career primarily with Harlequins making 395 appearances. A central figure in English rugby for over 15 years he is now a regular contributor on our screens with TNT Sports. Danny has also been a prominent advocate for player welfare and wellbeing, using his extensive lived experiences to provide insight in support of players.
Sue is also a former Red Roses International and is recognised as one of the most influential leaders in the development of women’s sport in England. A former national captain and current record holder for tries scored, she enjoyed a distinguished playing career before moving into senior administrative roles across sport. Sue has held executive positions within the Rugby Football Union and is currently Director of Women’s Football at The Football Association. Formerly a partner with KPMG, she was also awarded an MBE for services to gender equality in sport.
Danny Care said: “I’m delighted to be joining the RPA Board and to have the opportunity to represent players in a new way. It’s vital that players have a strong voice in the game, and after so many years as a professional, I’m looking forward to giving back by sharing my experiences and helping shape a positive future for the next generation.”
Sue Day MBE added: “Rugby is nothing without its players and the RPA does great work supporting and connecting those players. It’s a real privilege to be able to support the RPA and to be part of making sure that players remain at the heart of the growth of our wonderful game.”
Mark Rawlinson OBE, RPA Board Chair said: “Sue and Danny bring complementary skill sets as well as different perspectives. Their constructive advice will challenge the Boards and help us make better decisions in the interests of the players. At a personal level, I am delighted that they are both willing to help the RPA continue to progress and develop in support of all players.”
Christian Day, RPA General Secretary added: “A key priority for The Rugby Players Association in 2026-27 is reconnecting with retired players from all corners of the game and recognising their legacy. As retired players and icons of the English game, both Sue and Danny will provide insight to the RPA Board and its men’s and women’s players boards as we seek to improve the service to our members both past and present.”
