North Somerset’s spectacular coastline took centre stage this weekend as over 1,500 walkers, joggers and runners completed the 2026 South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge, tackling distances of 50km, 25km and 10km along one of the South West’s most dramatic stretches of national trail.
From sunrise on Saturday 25 July, the event’s basecamp near Dunster and Minehead became the hub of a challenge that drew participants from across the UK, all setting out along a route that showcased the very best of Exmoor and the North Somerset coastline.
Sweeping sea views across the Bristol Channel, rugged cliffs, hidden coves and rolling moorland formed the backdrop to a demanding yet unforgettable day on the trails.
The Challenge delivered an uplift for communities across North Somerset and Exmoor, with increased visitor numbers at hotels, pubs, cafés and independent shops throughout the weekend. Supporters lined sections of the South West Coast Path to cheer participants through some of the event’s toughest climbs and coastal stretches, contributing to a vibrant atmosphere across the region.
While seasoned endurance athletes pushed themselves across the full 50km, many participants took part at their own pace, walking, jogging or mixing the two. Teams, families and first‑time challengers were a prominent feature of the event, contributing to an inclusive and sociable atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the Ultra Challenge Series.
Charitable fundraising played a major role once again, with over £200,000 raised so far for causes across the UK. Many participants carried personal motivations and stories, adding a powerful human dimension to the challenge.
Organisers Ultra Challenge delivered a highly supported experience, with fully equipped rest stops, hot meals, medical teams and clearly marked routes guiding participants safely through what is a demanding coastal course. The event’s flexible format and accessible support structure ensured that participants of all abilities could take on the Challenge in a way that suited them.
With another successful edition now complete, the South West Coast 50 Ultra Challenge has reinforced its reputation as one of the region’s most scenic and rewarding endurance events. Organisers have also confirmed its return for 2027, with the Challenge set to remain a key fixture in North Somerset’s summer calendar.
