Celtic Challenge – a shock result

  • +1

Round 8 brought the unlikeliest upset of the season

Brython Thunder, till recently very much the minnows of the six-team league, achieved a staggering, but fully deserved win over the undefeated champions Wolfhounds at Parc Y Scarlets.

Your first reaction might be: Niall Alcorn was giving some of his top players the day off. A glance at the teams below shows this was very much not the case.

Many of Scott Bemand’s likely first choice side for the opening round of the 6 Nations were on parade here.

Brython put together two fine scores.

First, Jorja Alono made a telling break from the base of the scrum. Seren Lockwood steamed further ahead. As the ball spread left, even a bounce pass couldn’t stop Brython’s advance.

Amy Williams rounded the last defender, and she had time and space to run in under the posts (7-0).

Even better, the pack next thundered at the line. As the ball came out, Savannah Picton Powell ran a clever looping line from the blind-side to motor right through to the line (14-0).

Result: Brython Thunder 14-0 Wolfhounds
Player of the Match: Hanna Marshall

Just to put this game into context – at the previous meeting, Brython had gone down 0-69!
