With one month to go until the Opening Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, the British Olympic Association (BOA) has today confirmed Ellia Smeding will represent Team GB in long track speed skating, competing in the 1,000m and 1,500m distances.
In Beijing 2022, Smeding became the first female long track speed skater to represent Team GB since 1980, breaking British records in the 1000m and 1500m in the lead-up to her Olympic debut.
After a challenging previous season disrupted by injury, Smeding returned to the top 10 in the 1,000m in 2025 and will be aiming to build on her last Olympic appearance, where she delivered Team GB’s best-ever Olympic result by a female speed skater.
Ellia Smeding said: ”I am honored to be selected to represent Team GB for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Competing at my second Olympic Winter Games a dream come true, and after overcoming a difficult year of injury, this achievement feels even more special. I’m incredibly excited to compete against the world’s best on the Olympic stage once again and to show myself, and everyone who has supported me, what I’m capable of.”
Eve Muirhead OBE, Team GB Chef de Mission, said: “It’s brilliant to have Ellia officially on board for Milano Cortina 2026. She’s a history-maker who has shown incredible resilience to overcome recent injury setbacks and return to the world stage. The road to a second Games isn’t a straight line for any athlete, but the way Ellia has rebuilt to reach this moment is a testament to her character. I can’t wait to see her back on the ice for Team GB this February.”
Jon Eley, British Ice Skating Performance Director, said: ”We are proud to confirm Ellia as our long track speed skater for Milano Cortina 2026. Returning to competition after a tough year and earning selection for Team GB is thoroughly deserved, and a true testament to her hard work, dedication, and the outstanding support around her.
We look forward to seeing Ellia representing Team GB in February, whilst inspiring the future generation of long track speed skaters”
With thanks to Team GB
