Lancashire Thunder women vs Hampshire Hawks women (match 9 league one ‘double-header’) at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester on Wednesday, 4 June 2025
North-South derby, both strong sides pushing for the top-four places to qualify beyond the group stage. When comparing each innings, commentators noted that where Thunder were slow-off-the-mark, Hawks openers scored 32 runs from their first four overs. Hawks power-play score (48/1) was comparable with Thunder’s mid-way score (43/2.) Thereafter, host commentators repeatedly looked for ‘pressure’ (to take Hawks batters’ wickets) to be ‘cranked-up’ (by Thunder bowlers.) That didn’t happen although (earlier) Thunder’s top-scorer Ailsa Lister had ‘done her best.’ In the final analysis, Thunder batters just ‘didn’t score enough runs.’ For Kev James post-match interview with Hawks top-scorer Ella McCaughan [68*not out (from 57 balls)], please see below. Commentators were Scott Reid (Sports journalist, for Lancs TV) with Paul Shaw (former England Women’s head coach & exThunder Coach) and Fraser Dainton pitch-side for Lancs TV. Also with Kevan ‘Kev’ James for BBC radio Solent, and Kevin Howells for BBC 5live SportsXtra3. Weather was mainly cloudy 15C.
