The WPL Ltd launch initiative to support young women

  • +1

The Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) have launched an initiative in collaboration with The Powerhouse Project (PHP) to support young women looking to take their first steps into the media industry.

Working in collaboration with PHP, the league will host Social Media Storytelling Workshops, with the objective being to empower young women aged 18-21 with storytelling, technical skills, and hands-on experience in sports media.

This will involve teaching them how to create mobile-first social content for Barclays Women’s Super League (BWSL) & Barclays Women’s Championship (BWC) matchdays throughout the season, in turn providing additional coverage of the women’s professional leagues.

Alongside supporting the development of the next generation of young women in the sports media industry, the collaboration aims to bring even more behind-the-scenes content to supporters, alongside support the league’s broadcast partners and sponsors with additional coverage.

The collaboration builds on The Powerhouse Project’s ongoing work within the women’s sport media space, following the launch of Pixel FC Academy in October. In collaboration with Google Pixel the Academy aims to help aspiring female creators break into the sports media industry, by offering a comprehensive five-month programme with masterclasses led by leaders across the sports media landscape, including social content creation, broadcasting and written journalism.

As identified by Google Pixel, YouGov data shows that 70 per cent of female sports fans aged 16-24 believe sports media is a male dominated industry, with 63 per cent stating that they would be more likely to apply if they saw a greater number of women in prominent roles.  Initiatives such as the Social Media Storytelling Workshops and Pixel FC Academy represent a concerted effort across the industry to help close this gap.

Nikki Doucet, CEO of WPLL, said: “As we continue to tell the stories of our leagues in a distinctive and entertaining way and bring fans closer to the players and clubs, our work with The Powerhouse Project will enable us to serve our fans with even more content as well as upskilling the next generation of female content creators.

“It’s a fantastic initiative, we’re incredibly proud to be playing our part in it and we are very excited to see the content produced by exciting new talent alongside enhancing the coverage of our game.”
Applications for the Social Media Storytelling Workshops are currently being accepted, with 30 places in total available across two separate sessions which will be held in London (December 2024) and Manchester (January 2025).
