Durham sign prolific striker Carly Johns

Durham Women have announced the signing of prolific striker Carly Johns from Watford.

The 21-year-old makes the move to Maiden Castle off the back of a stunning debut season in the Barclays Women’s Championship with the Hornets and becomes our third summer addition.

Johns made her breakthrough at Oxford United where she scored 52 goals in 76 appearances as they continued to challenge at the top of the FA Women’s National League.

The striker’s best return came as she scored 20 goals in the 2022/23 season as her side narrowly missed out on promotion from tier three, earning Johns the league’s Golden Boot.

That fine form earned the youngster a move to Watford last summer and her debut season in the Barclays Women’s Championship was a successful one.

She scored nine times in all competitions – including two strikes against Durham – with her eight league goals making her one of the Championship’s top scorers last season.

And the highly-rated attacker has now put pen to paper on a professional contract at Maiden Castle – where she can’t wait to get started.

“I’m buzzing to be here,” she said. “I played against Durham last season and they were a really tough challenge, so it’s good to get to know all the girls and the staff and I’m really happy to be here.

“I’m really looking forward to it and hoping to improve on those numbers from last season.

“I work really hard, making runs in behind, and I can come to feet as well.

“But ultimately I like to score goals and set other people up.”

Carly will wear the number 9 shirt for Durham.

The deal remains subject to the approval of all paperwork.
