Harlequins have announced that Springbok Women’s prop Babalwa Latsha has signed a new contract with the Club.
The 29-year-old joined Quins in February this year and has made eight appearances for the Club, scoring four tries in four consecutive matches at the tail end of the season. Lethal from close range in attack and physical in defence, Latsha settled quickly into life at Quins and has become an integral part of the side’s front-row contingent.
The first South Africa Women’s player to sign a professional contract, Latsha has made 22 appearances for the Springboks, captaining her country on nine occasions.
Commenting on her renewal, Latsha said: ”I am incredibly excited to be having another season with my Harlequins family. I look forward to representing South Africa whilst representing every young woman in South Africa who has ever dreamed of playing on some of the world’s biggest stages. More than that though, I want to represent the Harlequins shirt to the best of my ability. Come on you Quins!”
Technical Director Brent Janse van Rensburg, commented: “BB has been fantastic since arriving at Quins. She is exceptionally professional, always the first on the pitch, commencing with her own warm up before anyone arrives, willing to put in the hard work. Since our first meeting it was clear that she is a great leader and her story is inspirational to aspiring women’s rugby players in South Africa and beyond.
“Around the pitch she brings physicality on both sides of the ball and is a weapon short range to the try line. Four tries in the last four games for a prop is impressive and there is more to come of her.
“Both BB and Aseza Hele have been the standout performers in the Springbok Women’s team the past couple of seasons and we are fortunate to have them both playing for us!”
With thanks to Harlequins
