A sensational return for Thunder’s Emma Dovey

Three-times Netball Super League winner and former captain Emma Dovey, is heading back to court for Manchester Thunder as the reigning champions endure an injury-hit season.

The 32-year-old last wore black and yellow in the 2021 season before hanging up her dress after 13 seasons. But now, after the birth of son Alfie last year and a call from Head Coach Karen Greig, she is making a Super League return.

Emma will replace defender Elia McCormick, whose season sadly ended following an Achilles tendon rupture which was confirmed earlier this week.

It has been a challenging season of injuries for Thunder with the loss of Yasmin Roebuck and Amy Clinton, plus both vice-captains Shadine van der Merwe and Kerry Almond continue to be on the side-lines and unavailable for selection.

Heading into a crucial part of the season, and with just over a week until Netball Manchester Live takes over The AO Arena on Sunday 7th May for the Roses clash with Leeds Rhinos, Karen Greig said putting in the call to Emma Dovey was a no brainer:

“Emma is Thunder to her core and I am thrilled she said yes to re-joining the squad. Her experience in the rest of this season both on and off court will be invaluable as we look to retain our title.

“She has spent the past year adapting to life as a mum and I can’t thank her enough for giving us some of her precious time after a challenging few weeks for so many of our players.”

“She laughed when I asked but agreed to come into training to see how she felt. For me it’s like she has never been away and has slotted straight back in.”

Of her return, Emma Dovey commented:

“I’ve literally only just returned to the court playing in some regional champions league games with my sister-in-law. I did not expect this opportunity, but what an opportunity and one I couldn’t refuse.

“It has been so long since I was able to play in front of a Thunder crowd due to the ‘Covid’ seasons, so it will be an honour to step back out in front of the best support in the league.

“Hopefully, I can make a contribution to the squad at this important part of the season and I can’t wait to be back in the black and yellow dress.”
