State of Play after Three Rounds of the Charlotte Edwards Cup

  • +1

*Speaking to BBC Solent Radio after Vipers’ third win, Georgia Elwiss (pictured above) made no secret that the Charlotte Edwards Cup is ‘A Trophy (that) Vipers Really Wanted To Win.’

During post-match interviews, Vipers’ skipper Georgia Adams said that she was playing ‘ten times more cricket’ and her team had ’stepped-up’ their performance. For background, TV commentator Charles Dagnall humorously questioned last year, whether Charlotte Edwards (as Head Coach at Vipers) should win her own cup?

*Five players have already made double-fifties during this year’s Charlotte Edwards Cup. England’s keeper Amy Jones tops the list. :-

1. Amy Jones, Central Sparks:  80 runs (from 49 balls); 52(44) & 40(28) = total (first three matches) 172

2. Georgie Boyce, Thunder: 71(56), 65(56) & 10(10) = total 146

3. Aylish Cranstone, SE Stars:  66*(49), 56*(46) & 18(17) = total 140

4. Katherine Bryce, Lightning: 54(51), 52(48) & 29(20) = total 135

5. Emma Lamb, Thunder: 56(49), 50(41) & 23(23) = total 129

Summary/conclusion

Significantly, no Vipers batter has yet hit one ‘fifty,’ although Maia Bouchier came closest during Vipers’ first game (with 48*not out.) Where rival teams might depend upon ‘fifties’ from one or two batters, Vipers batting success comes from their team’s overall performance (batting strike rate, bowling ability and fielding competence); rather than depend on one single batter’s performance.

Mid-way through this year’s Cup fixtures reveals that Vipers and Sparks are the only team to score maximum points from three wins. Points table at URL: https://www.ecb.co.uk/matches/womens-t20/table
