Heather Knight’s Skipper’s Innings Sets Up England Win

  • +1

England Women vs New Zealand W 1st ODI at Bristol on 16th September

Receiving POTM ‘Royal London’ medal for her match-winning 89 runs (from 107 balls), England’s skipper Heather Knight told Charles Dagnall she was ‘pleased with the win.’ Separately, she was committed to creating a wider England squad, including a ‘bigger squad’ of fast bowlers to chose from.

‘White Ferns’ skipper Sophie Devine knew she needed to have had more wickets-in-hand in the closing stages of the match: conceding that this was one match ‘that got away.’

Broadcast live on SKY Sports TV, Youtube, commentators included Charles Dagnall, Adam Collins (NZ), Lydia Greenway, Charlotte Edwards, Mark Butcher and guest Georgia Elwiss. Also broadcast via cricket social media (Valkerie Baynes for ESPN-crick-info) *Newbie Charlotte Dean received her 1st cap.

*England were playing one spinner, Sophie Ecclestone: without Sarah Glenn or Mady Villiers. Fielding substitute was Danni Wyatt. Anya Shrubsole and Emma Lamb were unavailable, recovering from injury.

*Batting first, England’s openers were ‘composed’ at 43/0 after 8 ov., then losing Lauren Winfield Hill (21.) Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight took the score to 73/1 by the 100 ball (16.4 ov.) benchmark. Beaumont (44) went ‘leg before’ just short of ‘fifty.’

*By mid-way (25ov.) England were 111/2. *Mid-order collapse lost 3 wickets for 27 runs: both Natalie Sciver and Amy Jones were clean-bowled by Lea Tahuhu (2/32.)

*Skipper Knight partnered by Katherine Brunt (43 from 51) took England’s score past the 200-mark. Commentators added that England made a ‘limp finish’ losing 5 wickets for just 13 runs.

*’White Ferns’ found Katherine Brunt’s first 4 overs unplayable. Natalie Sciver took wickets with her 2nd & 5th overs: Suzie Bates cleanly caught by Heather Knight and Lauren Down who was caught behind. By mid-way ‘Ferns’ were 93/3 (vs 111/2.)

*Amy Satterthwaite and Sophie Devine took the ‘Ferns’ past 100 until caught by Lauren Winfield-Hill from Kate Cross. Sophie Ecclestone was on a ‘hat-trick’, having dismissed Katey Martin (caught by Freya Davies) and Brooke Halliday whom Ecclestone clean-bowled for a golden duck. Faced with chasing down 72 runs from the last ten overs with 2 wickets remaining, bowlers-turned-batters Lea Tahuhu and Leigh Kasperek played cameos as they partnered Amy Satterthwaite, confidently striking ‘fours.’
