‘Vipers’ Lower Run-Rate Bizarrely Beats Bowled-Out ‘Thunder’

  • +1

Thunder Women’ vs ‘Southern Vipers W’ at Sale, Manchester on 10 September (Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy – round 5)

After five rounds, ‘Vipers’ retain their 1st place. Remarkably, ‘Vipers’ remain undefeated, beating ‘Thunder’ bizarrely with an inferior run-rate, but losing fewer wickets. Batting first, ‘Thunder’ were bowled out for a menial score (110.) Having a margin-of-safety of almost 100 balls, ‘Vipers’ were able to stage a leisurely run-chase, having taken more wickets in the early stages of the game. ‘Vipers’’ front-line bowlers Tara Norris and Paige Scholfield  (3/16) were outstanding, taking seven wickets between them.

*’Thunder’ lost 3 early wickets with only 14 runs on the scorecard (including 4 ‘wides’.) *Lauren Bell took the first two wickets clean-bowling Georgie Boyce (4); also Seren Smale (0) for a first-ball ‘golden duck.’ *Opener Emma Lamb (17) was caught by Tara Norris from Paige Scholfield’s very first ball – first of three wickets taken during each of her first three overs. *Tara Norris took two pairs of wickets during the same over. First two wickets fell when Norris caught-and-bowled Eleanor Threlkeld for a 7thball duck. Later in the innings Norris also caught-and-bowled Alice Dyson. *Tara Norris’ second pair of wickets fell during the final over when tail-ender Hannah Jones was caught by Paige Scholfield and ‘Thunder’ skipper Kate Cross (57 runs from 86 balls) was caught by Georgia Adams. *‘Thunder’ were 47/3 after 10 ov.; 61/6 at 100 balls (16.4 ov) and 88/7 by half-way. * Only 2 ‘Thunder’ batters made double-figures. *Top scorer Kate Cross was the final wicket to fall as ‘Thunder’ were all-out somewhat prematurely for a menial 110, with 101 balls remaining.

*’Vipers’ quickly lost opener Georgia Adams (2) who was caught behind from Kate Cross’ bowling. *‘Vipers’ were level-pegging, at 41/2 after 10 ov. but then lost Georgia Elwiss to Cross for a 4th ball duck. *’Vipers’ were fortunate to enjoy a two-wicket safety margin: 60/4 at 100 balls (16.4 ov); and were 85/5 by half-way. *Opener Ella McCaughan was top scorer (41) – one of two pairs of players who were dismissed ‘leg before.’ One pair were ‘leg before’ to Hannah Jones and another pair ‘leg before’ to former England spinner Alex Hartley. *Emily Windsor and Carla Rudd added a 37-run partnership to seal ‘Viper’s win; albeit with a lower team run-rate, almost 100 balls to spare and three wickets-in-hand.
