‘Northern Diamonds’ vs ‘Sunrisers’ at Gosforth (Charlotte Edwards Cup – Regional T20 – Group B)
Previous match was on 9 July when ‘Diamonds’ won at Chelmsford by 8 wickets (with 22 balls remaining.)
*Diamonds got off to a less than confident start, losing their opening pair (skipper Hollie Armitage and Leah Dobson) to catches from Naomi Dattani’s bowling; plus Beth Heath with only 23 runs on the board.
*The game turned into a procession as ex-England’s Jenny Gunn (2) was caught behind and Dutch national Sterre Kalis (4) was clean bowled by Grace Scrivens.
*Batters-turned bowlers Linsey Smith and Beth Langston lifted the score to past the 100 mark, until Smith was ‘run out’ (at 110/6.) Adding another 10 runs made a defendable score.
‘Sunrisers’ reply was a similar story, with opener Cordelia Griffith judged ‘leg before’ – getting a golden duck from Beth Langston.
*Only Jo Gardner (31 runs from 29) make a respectable score, until caught behind by Bess Heath. At that point, ‘Sunrisers needed 58 runs from 52 balls with six wickets remaining.
*Run rate escalated as Hollie Armitage bowled 15 ‘dot’ balls and took two wickets – including bowling Kelly Castle for ‘a duck’.
*Both tail-enders (Katherine Speed and Gayatri Gole) made double figures.
*Tight overs by Jenny Gunn with Linsey Smith bowling between the two, ensured ‘Sunrisers’ were unable to find any gaps between fielders to reach their target score.
Result: ‘Northern Diamonds’ 120/6 beat ‘Sunrisers’ 101/7 by 19 runs
