‘Invincibles’ Stage Unbelievable Tournament Finale

Final: ‘Oval Invincibles Women’ v ‘Southern Brave’ at Lord’s on 21 August

‘Invincibles’ have made history becoming the first ‘The Hundred Women’s Champions.’

Player-turned-commentator Ebony Rainford Brent told viewers ‘it was the best ever game she’d seen in her entire life.’ A carbon copy of the Eliminator, ‘Invincibles’ crafted a barely defendable score, then turned the tables on ‘Brave’ whose first six wickets were dominoed for 14 runs. With only 26 runs on the board at half-way ‘Brave’s’ elation turned to disappointment as remaining wickets fell – leaving them 48 runs short.

‘Match Hero,’ Marizanne Kapp achieved the tournament’s best performance: taking 4 wickets, conceding just 9 runs from 20 balls; including Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley: both for ducks.

Commentators said that South African Kapp had been ‘at or near the top of women bowlers’ ranking for a long time.’ Separately, it seemed fitting for the occasion that Marizanne Kapp took the tournament’s first wicket (just over a month ago); and Kapp also its last wicket, on Finals Day.

Collecting two trophies for the Winning Team and Individual performance: ‘Player of the Year;’ ‘Invincibles’ skipper Dane van Niekerk said that she knew everyone (in the team) stepped-up and performed to their strengths – especially Marizanne, whom she said: ‘always steps-up on the big stage.’

Van Niekerk added that playing ‘any game at Lord’s had made her dreams (since childhood) come true.’

The Hundred’s’ Final was broadcast live (commentators included Ebony Rainford Brent, Andrew Flintoff, with guest Kate Cross from SKY Sports TV; also cricket social media (Matt Roller and Valkerie Baynes for EPSN-cric-info.)

Previously, table-topping ‘Southern Brave’ had gained most points from the group stage and had made a record score (166) against wooden spoonists ‘Welsh Fire.’ ‘Brave were the first team to bowl out their opponents (when playing ‘London Spirit’.)

By comparison, ‘Oval Invincibles’ had learned from failing to chase down modest scores and losing by narrow margins. Also ‘Invincibles’ had played and won the ‘Eliminator’ – an extra match. Back to full strength, ‘Invincibles’ played South Africans Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail, reputedly the tournament’s two fastest bowlers (75-77mph.)

‘Brave’ played without Smriti Mandhana who’d returned to India.

Despite damp conditions, no time was lost and play started on time.

*For ‘Invincibles,’ Georgia Adams was deceived by Anya Shrubsole’s slower ball, caught by Danni Wyatt running in from deep mid-wicket

*At the power-play, Invincibles were 21/1; and 52/1 by mid-way *Both Fran Wilson (25) and Dane van Niekerk (26) were out within five balls of each other

*Joint top scorer Marizanne Kapp (26) was caught by Amanda-Jade Wellington, off Fi Morris *Mady Villiers was out last ball, easily caught by Maia Bouchier off skipper Anya Shrubsole

*‘Brave’s’ reply was their lowest tournament score (73), with 4 ducks and 3 players reaching double figures

*At the ‘power-play,’ ‘Brave’ (11/3 vs 21/1) had lost their first 3 players without scoring, hit 1 ‘four’ and had two lucky escapes; Jo Gardner dropping a diving catch

*Once 25 balls had been played by both sides, commentators pointed out that in case of rain, ‘Invincibles’ had the advantage from ‘Duckworth-Lewis-Stern’

*Shabnim Ismail took two more wickets immediately after the power-play, including a ‘run out’ as Fran Wilson scored a direct hit at Maia Bouchier’s stumps

*Skipper Anya Shrubsole (1) lobbed Alice Capsey’s first ball straight to Marizanne Kapp

*By half-way (50 balls; 21/6 vs 52/1) ‘Brave’ needed 101 runs at two-runs-per-ball which looked unlikely without any big hitters

*’Brave remained 30-runs adrift after 75 balls (48/7 vs 79/3) at which point ‘Invincibles’ looked certain of victory

*Fi Morris (23) played a top-score cameo innings

*During the ‘death’ over, Lauren Bell launched Marizanne Kapp for ‘four,’ received a ‘bouncer’ then found her stumps skittled, ending the match

*Only 3 ‘Brave’ batters made double figures (see below)
