Eliminator: ‘Oval Invincibles Women’ v ‘Birmingham Phoenix’ at the Kia Oval on 20 August

Receiving ‘Match Hero’ cap-and-medal, Tash Farrant was ‘super excited’ to reach tomorrow’s tournament final. Farrant added that (‘Invincibles’) ‘knew we didn’t get enough runs’ and ‘needed something special.’

Tash Farrant took 4 wickets for 10 runs from 19 balls; and goes top-of-the-board with 18 tournament wickets. Farrant’s match-winning ball was caught by Marizanne Kapp, who played a key role as top-scorer with her bat: putting on 54 runs with teen star Alice Capsey. Kapp’s superb opening spell had both ‘Phoenix’ openers caught behind – both for ducks. After 52 runs were banked by skipper Amy Jones and Erin Burns, ‘Invincibles’ turned the tables, inflicting a batting collapse nightmare in which 6 wickets fell for 13 runs; as Tash Farrant snapped-up the last two tail-enders.

The Hundred’s’ ‘Eliminator’ was broadcast live (commentators included Ebony Rainford Brent, Nasser Hussain and Andrew Flintoff, with guest Kate Cross from SKY Sports TV; also cricket social media (Peter Della Penna and Valkerie Baynes for EPSN-cric-info.) ‘Phoenix’ played without Shafali Verma who’d returned to India.

*’Invincibles’ lost both openers cheaply, with reviews finding Georgia Adams caught behind; whereas Dane van Niekerk had to be recalled – then dismissed after lobbing a ‘sitter’ of a catch to Marie Kelly at ‘mid-on’

*Marizanne Kapp anchored the innings through partnerships firstly with Fran Wilson. Kapp also adding 54 with Alice Capsey: whom Kapp later told commentators had played some ‘funky shots’

*Kapp scored the only ‘six’

*By mid-way, ‘Invincibles’ were 45/3 averaging just below one-run-per-ball – beyond which point scoring picked-up

*2 wickets fell during Kirstie Gordon’s penultimate over, when Katie Mack ‘ran out’ Alice Capsey and caught Mady Villiers

*Mack also ‘ran out’ Jo Gardner during the final over

*Throughout ‘Invincibles’’ innings, commentators were once again critical of slow progress resulting in ‘below-par’ score

* Nasser Hussain added that Invincibles had faced 43 non-scoring ‘dot’ balls

*Between innings, Marizanne Kapp said she needed to bowl well to defend (the score)

*Kapp added that the ground ‘owed her a few wickets’

*Tactically, commentators said that ‘Phoenix’ had to ‘get on top’ of the run chase so their lower order batters (who’d not spent much time at the crease) had less to do. Andrew Flintoff added that the match ‘was (poised) for ‘Phoenix’ to lose’

*Marizanne Kapp’s swing-bowling snapped up both ’Phoenix’ openers

*Australian Katie Mack was caught behind for a third ball duck

*Eve Jones was also caught behind, for a first-ball golden duck

*Skipper Amy Jones and Australian Erin Burns made a ‘fifty’ partnership for the 3rd wicket

*Tash Farrant made a spectacular catch to dismiss Erin Burns off Kapp, exactly at mid-way *‘Phoenix’ seemed comfortably in front, looking confident for a win (66/3 vs 45/3)

*Facing her first ball from Tash Farrant, Amy Jones chipped a catch to skipper Dane van Niekerk fielding at ‘extra cover’ – beyond which point only 2 more ‘fours’ were scored and 2 more wickets fell by the 75-ball marker *Beyond 75 balls, ‘Phoenix’ had lost their advantage as scores were level-pegging (87/3 vs 84/6)

*The mood in the ‘Phoenix’ dug-out changed from elation to disappointment as they witnessed a batting collapse – losing their last 5 tail-enders for ten runs

*Commentators said ‘Invincibles” catches were ‘outstanding’ and fielding was ‘of the highest quality’
