Sciver Strikes Match-Winning Fifty At Two Runs-per-ball

England Women v India Women 1st T20I Northampton on Friday 9th July

As heard on radio Sports Xtra, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method was applied to a rain-affected match awarding England Women a convincing win – having scored at a faster rate  *All Rounder Natalie Sciver’s match-winning half-century was top score for the match with a strike rate that exceeded two runs-per-ball. Sciver also bagged Smriti Mandhana’s wicket – one of Sophie Ecclestone’s two catches

* England’s openers Danni Wyatt 31 runs from 28 balls) and Tammy Beaumont (18 from 22) added 56 runs that saw England safely through the powerplay. Beaumont fell to a simple boundary catch, snapped-up by Smriti Mandhana off Poonam Yadav. *78 runs that were added by Amy Jones (43 from 27) and Natalie Sciver (55 from 27) included 12 ‘fours’ and 3 ‘sixes’ *At the 100-ball benchmark, England were 148-3 (16.4 ov)

* India curtailed England’s score shy of 200 when Shikha Pandey struck three times during England’s penultimate (18th) over. Firstly, Harmanpreet Kaur made a ‘fantastic’ catch at ‘long-on’ to dismiss Natalie Sciver. Four balls later Amy Jones fell to ‘one of the best catches ever seen’ by Isabelle Westbury – as Harleen Deol made three attempts at a ‘ridiculous’ catch just inside the boundary. Thirdly, Sophia Dunkley (1) was stumped by Richa Ghosh, losing her balance. Commentators thought that Dunkley’s season was exceptional and she deserved her international place

*For India, Smriti Mandhana (29 runs of 17 balls) offered spirited resistance with six ‘fours.’ Shafali Verma (0) fell to a second ball duck to Katherine Brunt *When rain stopped play India (54-3) needed to score 124 runs from 11.2 overs at more than ten runs-per-over – a scenario that commentators thought ‘unlikely’ if umpires had no appetite to continue

Result: England Women 177-7 (20 overs, run rate 8.85) beat India 54-3  (8.4 ov. rr. 6.23) by 18 runs (DLS method)
