York City Knights look forward to season opener

  • +1

This weekend, 18th April, marks the return of the Women’s Super League and York City Knights have a tough opener away to Leeds Rhinos.

The York City Knights are founder members of the Women’s Super League which is now entering its third season. The League comprises 10 teams: Bradford Bulls, Castleford Tigers, Featherstone Rovers, Huddersfield Giants, St Helens, Wakefield Trinity, Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors and of course Leeds Rhinos.

Before the pandemic struck rugby league was one of the fastest growing women’s sports in the country and players will be desperate to get back playing with their clubs again at all levels.

Women’s rugby is well established in York and with the support of the Knights the hope is to promote the participation of more women and girls and inspire them to play at all levels of the sport.

Referring to the challenges already faced in getting back playing again, Assistant coach Kay Rollinson said: “No matter the outcome of this season I think we have to embrace the fact that we have been given the chance to play at all this year.”

Her reaction to playing the Rhinos on Sunday: “Leeds have quality in every position and as long as we compete to the best of our ability then that’s all we can ask of the girls.”

Under coach Daryl North and assistant coach Kay Rollinson there is always a welcome to new players at York City Knights, and anyone interested in joining the club should contact Team Manager Adam Prentis at ladies@yorkcityknights.com for more information.
