Team Bath Tennis player Alicia Barnett claims Egyptian crown

  • +1

Team Bath Tennis ace Alicia Barnett continued her fine form during 2021 by claiming the women’s doubles title at the ITF Sharm-El-Sheikh tournament in Egypt.

Barnett, who is coached by Ian MacDonald, and partner Yuriko Miyazaki didn’t drop a set all week as they underlined their status as top seeds in the draw.

After starting their week with a 6-0 6-2 victory over Anna Borovinskaya and Laure Line Glaude, Barnett and Miyazaki overcame Lee Ya-Hsuan and Aline Thommen 6-3, 7-6(4) to reach the semi-finals.

A 6-1 6-4 win against Funa Kozaki and Thaisa Grana Pedretti set up a trophy showdown against Yeon Woo Ku and Raphelle Lacasse, who stayed in the contest early on before Barnett and Miyazaki stamped their authority to secure the title with a 6-4 6-1 success.

Team Bath touring professional Liam Broady, who is coached by David Sammel, has also made a good start to the year and qualified for the main draw at the Miami Open in the United States. He put up a strong fight against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović, ranked 46 in the world, and won the second set on a tie-break before going down 5-7 7-6(5) 1-6.

The outdoor tennis courts are back in action at the Team Bath Sports Training Village this week, both for training and recreational tennis. Find out more about booking a court and other outdoor facilities at www.teambath.com/reopening.
