Wasps defeated by a strong Harlequins side in Round 8

  • +1

Wasps FC Ladies suffered a hard loss to top of the table side, Harlequins in round 8 of the Tyrrell’s competition. Despite a strong defensive performance from Wasps, Harlequins’ finishing lead them to a 13-39 victory.

The game got off to a quick start with an early try in the corner from Harlequins’ winger, Jess Breach. But minutes later a penalty in Wasps favour saw Lizzie Goulden close the gap. In the next 20, Harlequins increased their lead to by 12 points- Anna Caplice and Leanne Riley both crossing the line. However, a penalty against Harlequins and a yellow card for prop Shaunagh Brown gave Wasps an opportunity to retaliate.  Hannah West flew over the white wash with 5 minutes left in the half and Lizzie Goulden provided the extras to bring the score to 10-17. The half finished on a high for the home side with another penalty kick from Goulden leaving the half-time score at 13-17.

Four minutes into the second half, Harlequins extended their lead, this time their forwards coming through the defensive line and Sarah Beckett scoring the try. Despite an epically strong defensive performance, notably from Wasps player, Edel McMahon, Harlequins continued to dominate the half with further tries from Amy Cokayne and Heather Cowell which lead them to their victory.

“The commitment level from the whole squad today was a huge positive to bring with us into next week’s game against Richmond. I’m looking forward to putting in a huge performance and demonstrate what Wasps can do!” Edel McMahon, No. 6

A tough day in the office for Wasps but some outstanding individual performances, leaving the team with plenty to take through with them into next week’s game against Richmond.
