Brazil women qualify for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

Brazil’s women have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after winning the Sudamericano Femenino Rugby Sevens title in Lima, Peru at the weekend.

As Yaras defeated Colombia 28-15 in an entertaining final played in front of a strong Peruvian crowd. In claiming silver, Colombia are guaranteed a place in the Olympic Games repechage and the Pan American Games in Lima next month, capping a successful weekend.

In the bronze medal match, hosts Peru delivered a stellar performance against Argentina, and were level deep into the second half before Argentina pulled away away for a 22-12 win.

World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont added: “It has been an exciting couple of weeks for sevens in an Olympic Games context. New Zealand’s men’s and women, Fiji, USA and South Africa’s men all booked their places via the series and now we congratulate Brazil’s women on their qualification.”

World Rugby Vice Chairman and Rugby Americas President Agustín Pichot added: “Congratulations to Brazil, who will proudly fly the flag for South America at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and on the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series – they fully deserved another South American title.

“Colombia’s hopes are very much alive too via the repechage. Women’s sevens is on the rise in South America and this competition continues to be a driving force. Thank you to Peru for being superb hosts.”

Rugby Sevens will be making its second Olympic Games appearance at Tokyo 2020, with the competition running over six days from 27 July to 1 August.
