Jazz Carlin and Calum Jarvis selected for Commonwealth Games

  • +1

Welsh swimmers Jazz Carlin and Calum Jarvis are the latest University of Bath-based sportspeople to be officially selected for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

They are among 93 athletes across 11 sports added to the Team Wales squad for the Games, taking place in Australia from April 4-15.

University of Bath graduate Jacob Paul, a 400m hurdler who was supported by a Trendell Sports Scholarship while studying Sport & Social Sciences, has also been added to the Team England athletics squad following long-jumper Greg Rutherford’s withdrawal.

Carlin, coached by Dave McNulty with the British Swimming National Centre Bath at the University’s Sports Training Village, will be looking to medal at a third successive Commonwealth Games.

She won 200m freestyle silver and 400m freestyle bronze at Delhi 2010, then became the first Welsh woman to win swimming gold in 40 years when she took the 800m freestyle title at Glasgow 2014.

Carlin, who went on to win two silver medals at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, will be looking to defend her 800m freestyle crown and will also compete over 200m on the Gold Coast.

National Centre Bath team-mate Jarvis, a Sports Performance graduate and coached by Jol Finck, won 200m freestyle bronze at Glasgow 2014 and has gone on to help Great Britain to successive 4x200m freestyle gold medals at the World Championships.

Carlin and Jarvis take the number of University-based swimmers heading to the Gold Coast up to nine. National Centre colleagues Jessica Fullalove, James Guy, Cameron Kurle, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Andrew Willis are all in Team England along with MJ Church ambassador Anna Hopkin. She trains with the University student swimming squad, as does Miles Munro who is in the Guernsey team for the Commonwealths.

A total of 21 sportspeople based at the University of Bath have now been selected for the Gold Coast, while 14 bobsleigh and skeleton athletes have been picked by Team GB for the other major multi-sport event of 2018 – next month’s Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.
