Richmond look to Worcester for a change in fortune

  • +1

Richmond head to Worcester this weekend after a second half capitulation against Gloucester-Hartpury made it five defeats in a row. The positives, though, were there to take, and coach David Mobbs-Smith will be hoping his side can build on a first half that saw some flowing rugby from his side earn them two great tries.

With that in mind, Mobbs-Smith has opted for consistency in the backline for the visit to bottom side Worcester Valkyries, with the centres and back three unchanged after strong performances from Alicia McComish, Vic Britland, Rachel Laqeretabua, Maria Gyolcsos and Emelie Hellgren. At half-back, meanwhile, Jade Knight’s call-up to the Wales squad opens the door for Jade Wong, back from injury and taking up the number nine shirt, and she is joined by the returning Abi Chamberlain at fly half.

After impressing at ten last week, Sanna Vestman-Stromberg retains her spot in the squad, and is joined on a strong looking bench by Char Keane, Kirsty Lee Griffiths and Katie Wallis as backline reserves.

Sophie Barnett and Courtney Treco complete the bench, as the duo back up a strong looking pack. Libby Povey, Zoe Barber and Chloe Butler – the Australian back from injury – make up a very mobile back row, while Row Burnfield leads from the second row alongside Claire Phelps.

In the front row, Alex Zdunek steps up from the bench to start alongside French international Gaelle Mignot and the ever-present, ever-impressive Laura Kapo, who makes the somewhat unusual move from number eight to the front row.

“We’re travelling up to Worcester in search of an away win,” said Mobbs-Smith, “ and the Midlanders  are in desperate straits themselves, so will be looking at Richmond as the opportunity to gain a first home win. Abi Chamberlain has returned to strengthen our backline, but we know we need to put in a good performance to take the win and get our season back on track.”
