Olympic and World medallist Emily Diamond, British Champion David King and rising star Tom Gale are the latest University of Bath-based athletes to be selected by Team England for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Alumni Danny Talbot, Jack Green and Rosie Clarke are also in the athletics squad for the Games, taking place in Australia from April 4-15.
Diamond, who is coached remotely at the Sports Training Village by Jared Deacon, will be competing at a second Commonwealth Games having made her debut at Glasgow in 2014.
She will be looking to add to her growing collection of medals from major international meetings, having won 4x400m relay gold, silver and bronze during the past 18 months at the 2016 European Championships, 2017 World Championships and Rio 2016 Olympic Games respectively.
MJ Church Ambassador King, coached by James Hillier, will gain more major competition experience having competed at the London 2017 World Championships earlier this year. He is the reigning British Champion in the 110m hurdles.
Gold Coast selection caps an outstanding breakthrough year for 18-year-old Gale, who won high jump bronze at the European Junior Championships and cleared 2.30m this summer – the second-best jump ever by a Briton at junior level. The Team Bath AC athlete, supported by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) and British Athletics Futures Programme, is coached by Denis Doyle at the Sports Training Village.
Sports Performance graduates Talbot and Green both won relay medals at the London 2017 World Championships, 4x100m gold and 4x400m bronze respectively, while steeplechase athlete Clarke – who studied Accounting & Finance at the University of Bath – also competed at the Olympic Stadium this summer.
The selection of Diamond, King and Gale takes the number of University of Bath-based sportspeople confirmed to compete at the Gold Coast 2018 Games up to seven.
Thompson Education Trust sporting scholar Cameron Chalmers, coached by Hillier, will represent Guernsey in athletics, while British Swimming National Centre Bath trio James Guy, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor and Andrew Willis have been selected in the England squad.
