Round 4 Tyrrells Premier 15s Update

  • +1

Round four of the Tyrrells Premier 15s produced a stunning comeback, a new side at the top and an enthralling west country derby. Here is the review of the best of the action.

Loughborough Lightning 30-19 Firwood Waterloo Ladies

Loughborough Lightning picked up their second win of the Tyrrells Premier 15s season after a remarkable turnaround saw them score 25 unanswered second-half points against Firwood Waterloo.

Fly half Natasha Jones notched the hosts’ only score of the opening period 10 minutes before the break, but three early Waterloo tries made it 19-5 at the break – Vanessa Temple finishing off the pick of the bunch.

But Loughborough Lightning were unstoppable in the second period with Olivia Jones charging over the whitewash for a spectacular try to cap a period of three tries in seven minutes.

Celia Quansah then finished in the right-hand corner as Loughborough won 30-19 and moved up to sixth.

Bristol Ladies 28-20 Gloucester- Hartpury Women’s

Lottie Holland’s second-half double helped Bristol Ladies notch their third successive victory of the campaign and knock west country rivals Gloucester-Hartpury off the top of the Tyrrells Premier 15s in the process.

Playing under the Ashton Gate lights, unbeaten Gloucester- Hartpury were much-fancied after three straight bonus-point wins, and scored first with a try from centre Rachael Lund inside three minutes.

But two quick-fire tries changed the game as Cat McNaney dotted down after collecting England international Amber Reed’s offload, before scrum half Caity Mattinson sniped over from the base of a ruck.

Reed’s penalty gave her side a slender 15-12 advantage at the interval, but it was two more tries inside three minutes that clinched the win.

Holland went over in the corner after Bristol Ladies put the ball through the hands before Claire Molloy’s break saw the centre score again, and another Reed penalty took the final score to 28-20.

Harlequins Ladies 36-10 Darlington Mowden Park Sharks

Harlequins’ maintained their 100 per cent start to the season and moved to the top of the table after a 36-10 triumph over Darlington Mowden Park Sharks.

Another flurry of points in the first-half was the key to their success, as they had the bonus point wrapped up before the break.

Jess Wooden crossed twice before half-time with Red Roses prop Vickii Cornborough and Jess Breach also getting their names on the scoresheet, and a penalty try rounding off the points.

Darlington Mowden Park Sharks Elle Bloor and Katherine Hobson reduced the deficit in the second 40 with Holly Myers shown a yellow card, but the tables were turned in the closing stages as Linzi Taylor was sin-binned and Laura Dowsett raced over for Quins’ sixth try of the afternoon.

Saracens Women 30-0 Wasps FC Ladies

Saracens Women picked up their third straight bonus-point victory and recorded a second shut-out in as many weeks as they swept London rivals Wasps FC Ladies aside to win 30-0.

With the game being played at Allianz Park, the hosts started brightly but had to wait until the 17th minute to open the scoring, as Nina Vistisen made the incisive break and Sarries worked the ball for Helena Rowland to score in the corner.

And two more quick-fire tries came their way before the interval as first Garnet Mackinder streaked through from 40 metres out and then Zoe Harrison found a gap after a catch-and-drive.

The extra point was secured 10 minutes into the second half as skipper Lotte Clapp benefitted from some patient build-up play, and there was still time for England flanker Marlie Packer, who scored six times on her debut last week, to put gloss on the win.

Richmond FC 48 – 12 Worcester Valkyries

Prop Laura Kapo celebrated her 100th appearance for Richmond in style with the London side securing their third win in four weeks.

They cruised past Worcester Valkyries to win 48-12 at the Athletic Ground to respond to last week’s heavy defeat at Gloucester-Hartpury.

Swedish flyer Emelie Hellgren got their first score, with Katie Wallis finishing off a brilliant handling move and skipper Rowena Burnfield going over for a forwards’ try all before 20 minutes had gone.

Brooklyn Clarke scored twice for the visitors either side of half-time, but a penalty try wrapped up the bonus-point and replacement Kirsty-Lee Griffiths, Claire Phelps, and Emily Stone all got on the score sheet late on as the south-west Londoners moved into fifth spot.
