Softball is alive and well and being played across the UK

We started this site with the intent of promoting as much women’s sport as possible and am now very happy to add softball to the list of sports included.

It was with some delight that I came across the Sefton Sharks, who play in the Sefton Softball League, a fun, co-ed slowpitch softball league for players across Sefton, Merseyside, Wirral and surrounding areas.

On investigating further I discovered that there are active and thriving leagues across the UK governed by the British Softball Federation (BSF).  Most of the teams are co-ed and the leagues are soft pitch, but there are growing single sex teams and also some developing fast pitch leagues too.

Five teams make up the Sefton League and each will field 5 women and 5 men per team.  The 2017 season runs from 5 May to 14 August with games being played on Monday evenings.

If you would like to take part in a really fun sociable sport then I would definitely recommend having a go at softball, it is also one of the few sporting activities that couples can enjoy taking part in together.

For anyone who doesn’t know, softball is a social form of American baseball, the main difference is that the ball is pitched at a slower rate and yes it is similar to rounders.

The rules are nicely explained on the Sefton website here.

With softball likely to be included in the 2020 Olympics the sport’s popularity is likely to grow even further.

If you would like to find out more about softball or find a league or team near you then you can do so here .
