Sophie Ecclestone has been shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year. Named in a shortlist of 10 athletes the Lancashire Thunder and Lancashire Women bowler has had an amazing year making her debut for England Women in the summer against Pakistan in an International T20 where she impressed taking figures of 1/21 from her four overs in Bristol.

The top three, chosen by an expert panel, will be named on Blue Peter on Thursday 8 December, with the winner announced during this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which will come live from the Genting Arena, Birmingham, on Sunday 18 December.

Bobby Cross, Lancashire Thunder’s General Manager, said: “This is a fantastic accolade for Sophie to receive and one that caps a wonderful year for her. As with all of the other nominees this kind of recognition comes on the back of years of hard work and dedication by not only the individual but also many people at grass roots level that encourage young people to get into sport.

“We are very proud of Sophie and of all those in club cricket, staff at Cheshire Cricket Board, our own coaching staff and all those that continue to support her career as she moves forward.

“For a female cricketer to be nominated for this award in an Olympic year shows just how far the women’s game has come in recent times and reflects great credit on all at Lancashire for continuing to strive to become a leading centre for women’s cricket.”
