Pamela Cookey retires from Superleague Netball

  • +1

Surrey Storm and England shooter Pamela Cookey has announced her retirement from playing domestic netball.

The former international had two spells with Storm in a glittering career, which saw her secure two Superleague titles with the club. Pamela also has two Commonwealth Games medals in her collection, making her arguably one of England’s most successful netball athletes.

Cookey made her Netball Superleague debut in 2005 with Team Bath, bagging her first title in the 2005/06 season before adding another in 2008/09. Her success turned heads in the ANZ Championship and she was signed by the Northern Mystics in 2009.

She made her first appearance in a Storm dress in the 2012 season, taking her side to the Grand Final, before returning to Bath for two seasons.

Her re-signing in 2014 showed that she was still up to the task, reuniting with Rachel Dunn to form one of the Superleague’s strongest ever shooting partnership and secure back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016.

Today’s retirement announcement coincides with the news that Pamela will take up the role of Director of Netball at new franchise Severn Stars, working alongside Head Coach Mo’onia Gerrard and Franchise Director Dr Anita Navin.

Surrey Storm Franchise Director, Gavin Baker, said: “We are devastated to be losing Pamela – a player who has given so much to us in her two spells at the club. She is loved by fans and will be remembered for her infectious smile that she has on court, win or lose!

“On behalf of everyone at Storm I would like to wish her the best in her new role at Severn Stars.”
