Rio 2016: Team GB Day 15 Preview

  • +1

The penultimate day of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has the potential to be the day of champions with Mo Farah, Nicola Adams, Tom Daley, Liam Heath and Bianca Walkden all within a great shout of claiming gold.

Farah leads the way for Team GB on day 15 with the men’s 5,000m final at the Olympic Stadium set for 01:30 BST and boxer Adams is alongside him with the women’s flyweight final scheduled in Riocentro.

Gold will see Adams follow the lead of Laura Trott, Charlotte Dujardin and Jade Jones in defending an Olympic title at Rio 2016 and don’t rule out diver Daley, canoe sprinter Heath and taekwondo player Walkden.

Daley goes in diving’s blue-ribband men’s 10m platform, the semi-final first then the final should he get there, and while facing stiff competition Qiu Bo of China and American David Boudia, the Brit is more than capable of topping the podium on his day.

As for Heath, already an Olympic silver medallist in the K2 200m in Rio, he was in blistering form in the individual K1 200m, winning the first of two semi-finals and reaching the final at the Lagoa as the fastest.

And Walkden, based on her trophy cabinet, should be in contention in taekwondo’s women’s heavyweight draw having won gold at the World Championships in Chelyabinsk in Russia last year.

They are the main protagonists but, actually, the Team GB medal hopes extend far beyond those with the women’s triathlon featuring three Brits in the form of Helen Jenkins, Non Stanford and Vicky Holland.

Mahama Cho makes it double interest in taekwondo as he goes in the men’s heavyweight draw while Heath is joined in canoe sprint finals action by the women’s K4 500m team of Rachel Cawthorn, Louisa Gurski, Jess Walker and Rebeka Simon.

Back at the Olympic Stadium and it could be one hell of an ending with Lynsey Sharp in the 800m, Charlie Grice in the 1500m, Morgan Lake in the high jump and both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays joining Farah in finals.

Charley Hull has an outside shot at a medal at the conclusion of golf’s first Olympic women’s tournament for 116 years while Joe Choong and Jamie Cooke complete the men’s modern pentathlon.
