Rio 2016: Team GB – Day 14 Preview

  • +1

Day 14 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is the Team GB’s women’s hockey outfit’s day of destiny as they bid for a first ever gold medal in their first ever final at Rio 2016.

Team GB have gone unbeaten in the tournament to date, that equating to seven wins, and just need to defeat the Dutch to upgrade bronze from London 2012 to gold.

Push back is scheduled for 21:00 BST and is set to dominate the early evening although there are plenty of other key Team GB medal contenders in action in Rio.

Super heavyweight boxer Joe Joyce will bid to follow the Team GB women’s hockey players’ lead by winning his semi-final in Riocentro and also guarantee at least silver.

And, again like the Team GB women’s hockey players, Lutalo Muhammad will aim to upgrade the bronze he won at London 2012 in the men’s 80kg taekwondo category.

There is an exciting evening planned at the Olympic Stadium with Team GB involvement in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays medal showdowns.

Dominic King goes in the men’s 50km race walk at Pontal, Eilish McColgan goes in the women’s 5,000m final back in the Stadium as does Holly Bradshaw in the pole vault.

Showjumpers Nick Skelton and Ben Maher start from zero in the individual final round while Kate French and Samantha Murray complete the women’s modern pentathlon.

That wraps up the medal hopes on Day 14 but again foundations can be laid with Liam Heather, silver medallist in the canoe sprint K2 200m on Day 13, going individually.

Team GB’s women’s K4 500m outfit of Rachel Cawthorn, Louisa Gurski, Jess Walker and Rebeka Simon also get underway with two of the squad having gone individually.

Only the heats and semi-finals, should they get there, are planned on Day 14 with the finals the day after while golf enters its penultimate round of the women’s competition.

Charley Hull is tied for third and Catriona Matthew is also in the hunt and Tom Daley finally returns to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre for the 10m platform.

Only the preliminary round is scheduled but Daley, who won Olympic bronze in the 10m synchro on Day 3, will want a solid performance on the boards.
