Sharks overpower Waterloo

  • +1

Sharks travelled to play their Northern friends at Waterloo on Sunday 21st February 2016 in the Senior Cup.  The pitch was in remarkable condition considering the recent weather; the sun was out with a strong breeze blowing across the ground.

Waterloo got the game underway, the ball was collected by Sharks’ Katherine Hobson who ran the ball back at Waterloo with venom.  The first 15 minutes play was fairly even with both sides showing attacking intent.

Sharks broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when Sarah Bush dived on a loose ball, quick service from scrum half Emma Lloyd Edwards to Mackenzie Thomas saw her race up the wing only to be stopped by an excellent tackle, a fantastic clear out by Linzi Taylor secured the ball for Captain Georgina Roberts who sprinted down the line, a well-timed pass to the supporting runner No 8 Jo Brown dealt with the last defender and saw her race over the line for the first try (not converted) leaving the score Waterloo 0 Sharks 5.

Waterloo restarted the game, the ball was secured and a fantastic box kick from Emma Lloyd Edwards saw Sharks deep into Waterloo territory, unfortunately Sharks Emily Hunter was judged to have infringed at the breakdown and was shown the yellow card.

Sharks responded well to the card and redoubled their efforts, fly half Rebecca Scholes saw space on the left hand side and capitalised with a fantastic cross field kick, which saw the ball gathered by no 14 Eleanor Pitcher, quick recycled ball saw no 4 Lisa Cockburn (pictured above) cut a great line from just inside Waterloos 22 to race over and score (converted by Sam Jamieson) leaving the score on 20 minutes Waterloo 0 Sharks 12.

Waterloo responded to this score well and for the next 10 minutes kept Sharks at bay, but eventually Sharks pressure told when Waterloo’s scrum was put under pressure on their own 5 metre line, fantastic line speed by Sharks’ flanker Ruth Nash saw her charge down the ball, Captain Georgina  Roberts showing great reactions to collect the rebound and dot down (not converted) leaving the score on 30 minutes Waterloo 0 Sharks 17.

Sharks had their tails up and when scrum half Emma Lloyd Edwards found full back Emma Harbage in space, she turned on the pace with a mazy run, turning the Waterloo defence inside out before committing the last defender, passing out to Mackenzie Thomas for her to score wide out on the right (which was converted with a fantastic wind defying kick by Sam Jamieson) leaving the score at Half time Waterloo 0 Sharks 24.

Sharks got the second half underway a great break by Mackenzie Thomas down the right hand side saw Sharks deep into Waterloos half, the ball was driven on by Sarah Bush who was stopped just short of the line, quick service from Emma Lloyd Edwards found prop Amy Needham, who showed great hands by delivering a perfectly timed pass to her forward partner, prop Emily Hunter, who powered over to score to the right hand side of the post (not converted) leaving the score on 48 minutes Waterloo 0 Sharks 29.

Sharks continued to pile on the pressure and quick service from  replacement scrum half, Eleanor Pitcher, to her half back partner Scholes whose quick hands released Captain Georgina Roberts to surge up the pitch, supported by prop Amy Needham, who received the ball in space and raced towards the line only to be stopped by a fantastic covering tackle, but a great off load to centre Linzi Taylor kept the ball alive and saw her over the line to score on 55 mins (not converted) making the score Waterloo 0 Sharks 34.

Sharks continued to work hard and the pressure told when they pushed Waterloo back to their own 5 metre line for a line out which was won, against the head, by Sharks’ flanker Katherine Hobson and driven towards the try line only to be stopped by some strong defence. Scrum half Eleanor Pitcher gave quick service to her half back partner Scholes which saw her spin pass the onrushing defenders to score to the left hand side of the post (not converted) leaving the score on 75 mins Waterloo 0 Sharks 39.

Sharks continued to pressure Waterloo and another great cross field kick by Scholes saw full back Emma Harbage in space, she sprinted forward a quick pass out to Selina Thomsen and then out to no 8 Jo Brown who made a huge miss-pass out to centre Linzi Taylor she delayed her pass out perfectly for hooker Sam Jamieson to score wide out on the left (not converted) leaving the final score Waterloo 0 Sharks 44.

This was a great team performance by Sharks but special mention should go to the Waterloo ladies who battled to the last whistle

Forward of the match was awarded to Sarah Bush and Katherine Hobson.
