Durham Women FC are delighted to announce the signing of Northern Irish international defender Sarah McFadden.

McFadden, 28, joins the Wildcats after spending the past four years at Sunderland Ladies having previously played in Iceland for Grindavik and Fylkir.

Despite missing periods through injury, McFadden made 14 appearances for the Lady Black Cats in FA WSL 1 last season and impressed at the top level.

Comfortable in the centre of defence, midfield or up front, McFadden boasts international pedigree having been capped over 40 times for Northern Ireland, scoring four times.

After signing for Durham Women, McFadden said: “I’m excited for a new challenge this season. I have really enjoyed my last five years at Sunderland but feel at this time in my career I want a new challenge.

“It’s important for me to get back playing regularly after recent injuries and after training with the girls and speaking with Lee (Sanders, General Manager), Durham is the perfect opportunity for me.

“Hopefully we can compete with some of the top teams in the league and push for promotion.”

General Manager Lee Sanders was also delighted to secure the signing of the defender, saying: “Sarah is a player who has won trophies at senior level with Sunderland, played at international level and who will add some valuable experience into the squad.

“I know the other players are looking forward to having her in the side, and for some of the younger players in the team, they can look and learn a lot from her also.

“When we knew there was some interest it was a no brainer to follow it up and I’m delighted she has agreed to join us.”
