One of Sydney’s leading netballers is to join Yorkshire Jets for the 2016 Vitality Netball Superleague. Sophie Halpin, who represented Australia at U19 level, will move from Sydney to be part of Anna Carter’s Jets squad for the new season.

The 22-year old mid-court player represented her state, New South Wales, for three years in the Australian Netball League and captained Netball NSW Blues in 2014. This year, she played for Tasmanian Spirit in the Australia-wide competition.

Sophie, who was part of the national U19 squad in 2012, says she’s excited to be joining Jets: “Playing in the UK is something I have always wanted to do, I am looking forward to the different coaching styles in Superleague and bringing my experience to Yorkshire Jets. I am ready to test my talents against the high quality English and international players in Superleague and look forward to helping Anna Carter’s side continue to develop after their best-ever season in 2015.”

“Living in Leeds is going to be very exciting and a completely different experience for me – especially swapping the Sydney summer for a Yorkshire winter, but I am ready for the challenge and excited to arrive and begin pre-season training. I also hope to bring a band of supporters south from Scotland, where I have many family members. I look forward to meeting my team mates, forming strong bonds and friendships and being a key member of the Jets family.”

Yorkshire Jets Head Coach Anna Carter says Sophie will be an important addition to her 2016 squad:  “Having a mix of exciting young talent and experienced players has always been important at Jets and having Sophie’s leadership skills, both on and off court, will be very important for the new season.”

“Her considerable experience playing at an elite level in Australia will bring a new dimension to the squad and help develop and bring new skills to our homegrown players. Following the signing of Stacey Francis, Sophie’s arrival at Jets is another indication of our intent to be one of Superleague’s leading teams and challenge for the top spots once again in 2016.”
