The Belles edge past unlucky Yeovil

DONCASTER ROVERS BELLES 2 – 1 YEOVIL TOWN LADIES

TWO-goal Courtney Sweetman-Kirk allowed FA Women’s Super League 2 promotion hopefuls Doncaster Rovers Belles to edge past unlucky Yeovil.

It was a second successive home victory for a side who came within an ace of going up last term but they were made to chase shadows for long spells by the free-flowing visitors.

Both first-half goals involved Yeovil’s outstanding wide player Helen Bleazard.

Her under-hit back pass allowed Sweetman-Kirk a free run down the middle to slip Belles into the lead against the run of play after 40 minutes.

But Bleazard responded in real style by sweeping past Lauren Cresswell and chipping a delightful cross for Paige Stewart to level in the last minute of the first half.

Bleazard then created two good second-half chances for Annie Heatherson who was narrowly off target with both her head and a lobbed shot.

But Donny, for whom Rhiannon Roberts hit the bar with a first-half header, caused their own problems with some fast breaks and Sweetman-Kirk’s 15-yard shot was just too much for goalkeeper Charlotte Haynes after 85 minutes.

Corinne Yorston had one more half chance for Yeovil whilst Reanne Thomas had a late effort ruled out for offside for Belles.
